PulseCMS - no images showing in Pulse blocks

I am really struggling with PulseCMS. Sometimes I get it working, other times not!

I am trying to demonstrate to a client this system, and I have a test site www.igmack.co.uk/testcms set up with ‘admin’ as the Pulse admin folder. The password is ‘demo’ and the active Pulse block is the one on the left on the ‘Agricultural’ page. The one with no content!

Can anyone help me here as I am tearing my hair out!

(I’ve tried on the Pulse forum, but response times are slow there even though Mike is really helpful.)

You’re using a trail version on a public site. Read here…

"You are using the Pulse CMS trial version. This is only suitable for testing purposes only, >>> on either a local or private testing server <<<.”

To view publicly you’d need to purchase it.

Thanks David, not sure what you’re point is. Mike of Pulse is completely comfortable with this as he responds to my cries for help.

I am trialling the system, and as soon as I am comfortable with it’s functionality, I will be buying a site licence each time. I am having a lot of issues with getting this working, and until I resolve them, I will use the trial.

Are you just policing, or can you offer any advice on my problem here?

David is saying you’re using the trial version on a public server when (according to the link he provided) the trial can only be used on a local or private server.

Two different things.

Good grief! I understand that, but my point still stands. How could I possibly troubleshoot/understand this system in order to use it on sites in the future if I didn’t share the issue on a forum like this. I’m trying to make some money for Mike the developer here!

The licence does not affect the functionality.

Can you offer any help with this issue?

It might.

Have you considered the trial is built in such a way that prevents it from functioning “normally” on a public server? So as to prevent anyone from using the “full” version without actually buying a license. Not exactly a new concept.

Can you offer any help with this issue?
Christ, I thought I was. Good luck.

I’m very surprised at the condescending attitude here.

All I am doing is trialling a system that I want to support in the future and having huge problems getting it working. I have wasted many hours on this in the last few days, which I can assure you, is worth a lot more than the £20 for the licence!

It is not a restriction of the trial licence, as sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t, it is an issue with the way Pulse works in a sub domain, I think.

As I have already stated, Michael of Pulse is very happy to help me, but his responses have been rather slow, for whatever good reason.

I postred here in the hope that someone would be able to help with the issue.

Iain,

I suggest you purchase a licence and place Pulse in a folder on your own host server, to get it fully functional. Then your clients can view ‘live’ when you have it up and running, afterwards transferring to their host server when ready.
I’ve found Pulse to be an excellent cms, if perhaps not as simple as it used to be. Michael I can see is putting a lot of effort into making it much more comprehensive and as he says he is just a team of one. I don’t think you will be disappointed. Of course there are other cms solutions some maybe more suited to your clients needs, such as Webyep.
Also, I cannot praise the generosity of those answering questions on FWT highly enough. They have come to my rescue on so many occasions, many relating to Pulse.
I can sense your frustration but keep at it.

Why should I purchase a license?
Can use on a public and live domain.
Personal or commercial sites.
Email and forum support.
Lifetime license with free updates.
Full featured white-label CMS.
Help keep Pulse going! We are just a team of one.

Thanks a lot. I actually have a licence, but I haven’t put it on a site yet, as until I see this working, i don’t want to put it on any particular domain.

I am very frustrated with Pulse as I have spent hours trying to get it to work, and as I said above, I don’t believe it relates to using it in trial mode. I have had it working previously on a test, but now it is not. Graphics and content are not showing up, and for the life of me, I can’t see why. The HTML seems correct in the path for the graphics files.

With respect to FWT, I have always found it to be a fantastic forum with incredibly helpful people, and that is why I was very surprised at the responses on this particular thread.

I am up against the clock and at my wit’s end to solve this. All I wanted here was a suggestion as to what the issue might be.

I followed your previous link to www.igmack.co.uk/testcms is it the index.php that has Pulse on it? Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Unfortunately we cannot see the underlying php code to help with diagnosis - you would need to stick it in a Pastie (or similar)

You give log in for the Admin but where is it?

Thanks David,

The simple test site is there now at igmack.co.uk/testcms and the Pulse admin folder is ‘admin’ with pw ‘demo’. Yes, it is index, php that has Pulse.

You can see that the top box and the left one have no content. They are the 2 defined blocks in Pulse. when I edit in Pulse, where there should be a image, there is just a ?. Also, if I select ‘insert image’ ‘from file’, all the images show as ? even though the HTML path looks correct in the editing box.

I have had the same site working before, and can’t understand what is happening!

Hi Iain,
I’ve taken the liberty of logging into your Pulse install to see what the issue could be.

The path set in the settings for ‘Pulse Folder Name’ was incorrectly set to “Admin” (including the quotes). This should have been the path to the CMS from the domain root - testcms/admin. I’ve updated this in the settings for you.

Can you check to see if the config.php file is actually on your server at /testcms/ please? I’ve seen issues like this in the past where the file was deleted by mistake and the CMS fails to log in correctly.

If you want to send me an email with your FTP details in it I can take a closer look at the server set up for you.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for that. I may have been doing something on the site. I will stop now so that people can see where things are.

Yes, the config.php is sitting in igmack.co.uk/testcms and it is still pointing to ‘admin’ as the Pulse dir.

I have tried ‘testcms/admin’ before in the config.php file, but that didn’t seem to make any difference. When things are change in the control panel, where does Pulse save the changes? Back to the config.php or somewhere else?

I will send you an email if I work out what your address is!

Yes pulse should save the settings back to the config file but it looks like it hasn’t updated the file. You can adjust it manually or if you send me the FTP details I can log in and do it for you.
Regards,
Tim.

Just to let everyone know in case it happens to someone else, Tim identified that the issue I was having relates to OS X’s Smart quote. Apparently, an editor like Textedit puts in Smart (or curly to you and i!) quotes rather than straight, and that causes code editors a lot of confusion.

I switched to CotEditor as default for the Pulse code files, and now everything is fine.

Thanks so much,Tim.

PS Here is a link to how to switch off Smart Quotes in OS X and Textedit.
