Sometimes when I am designing (very late at night) I start editing a page that I think is a Master page, and I will work on it for 30-45 minutes before realizing that I am actually working on one of the site pages and have therefore unlinked the page from the master.
Is there any way to re-link specific pages to a Master page in Freeway?
When you work on a site page you will find Reapply Master in the Page Menu drop dropdown. It does just that. However, you may need to reset the stacking of layers not on the Master manually, as they may become covered by a Master element. If you have just altered content in a Master Item you can also check the Use Master… boxes under Properties in the Inspector.
If you’ve really gone to town on changes and want to keep them for the master cut and paste the changed Items to replace the original Master. (if you copy and paste, you may end up with duplicate items on the site page).
Finally, I always keep a blank master and, when life looks bleak, I change the Master to ‘Blank’ in the Inspector and then change back to the Master I need, re stacking layers if necessary.

Pardon my ignorance here, but you’re supposed to be working on your child pages and using Master pages only as a starting point or a place to adjust repeated content like navigation, logos, etc.
Master pages are there as a building block to start each page in the same spot as you started other pages and by doing so it will then allow you to update certain elements which will then reflect changes within child pages that use that specific Master pages content.
Well, usually I’m working on a master page trying things out, then I need to make a page to preview, then go back working on the page instead of the master.
I suppose I can make the page a master if I do that.
Yes, most of the time, but sometimes you may wish to make global changes to items held on the Master pages (during design development or later) - and it is quite easy to start doing it while, inadvertently, you are still on a site page; especially if you are adjusting the fit of an item in relation to page specific content.

I would like a warning box that comes up after I preview a page that says, “You are about to work on a site page. Doing so will detach it from the master, OK?” This could be a preference to turn on or off similar to the undefined height pop up when working with CSS boxes.
I think that’s going way overboard. Of course you’re working on the
instance page, that’s where you put your content. The master, as Dan
said, is where you put the “furniture” like the header bar, the
footer, etc. that (hopefully) are exactly the same on every page in
your site or a section thereof.
As far as trying things out, what I do is start right away on a page
that has a blank master. I don’t put anything on the master at all,
and just start making a page. Once I like it, and have tested it on a
couple of other pages (using ordinary Duplicate Page to make sisters
for it) I take all the unique content off of that page, choose Page /
Make Master from the main menu, and THEN set off to make an army of
them.

I agree with Bob. For experts like Walter, they are in complete
command of what they are doing at all times. For casual users, like
me, it seems so easy for me to start modifying something, not actually
thinking that I’m on the site page, modifying something that is on the
master. I think it would be helpful to have an option to select that
a warning would come up if you try to modify something while you are
on a site page that is on the master page. This would be a friendly
reminder to “Go to the Master page” to modify that. Just my two cents
worth.
