question about multilanguages

Hi,

I’ve made a site and now it needs to be translated in 3 extra languages. Is there a way to do this in a fast way, or do I have to copy the site and translate it step by step?

I’ve tried the replace function but it doesn’t replace everything. SOmetimes it leaves pages unchanged.

Also with links and actions, is there still no way to change them in one go?

Hi David,

See my own 3 language site below as an example entirely devvelopped with FW. I believe I followed SP recommendations. I started creating the site in one language, which is what you have already done. Then after you’re happy move these pages under a folder named say english, then create as many sibling directories as you have languges to display, and well… yes, copy/paste/translate every page. A lot of hand work, but the result pays back imo.

I created a folder called common under which I create all pages common to all languages. FW does a great job optimizing/reusing common resources, photos etc, so don’t bother doing this yourself.

Hi,

thnx for the reply, but if you look at my site,
http://www.colac.be you will see it’s a whole other story.

I’m using css menu with extra markup, forms, etc. If I have to do this all manually. It’s going to take me hours.

Hi David,

I don’t see the whole other story. My web site is using a unique css menu as well, which is common to all pages and implemented in a master page: One for each language. Thies master page will have to be the parent of all the page instances you want it to appear. The links are edited only in the master pages and automatically reused by FW for every instance of a page using the master. This is of a great help indeed, even if is not the ideal solution.

The back side of the medal is that you have (I have as well) implemented cross language menus, i.e. menus referring to corresponding pages in different languages. That has to be implemented by hand, and is certainly tedious on top of testing… since it cannot be implemented in a master page. You’ll end up editing this menus in each and every page instance. Bad, I know, but necessary.

I don’t see any simple way to automatize the translation process with FW. Yes, it is mostly a hand process, and yes it is going to take you days, rather than hours. But FW makes a lot of things easier, like keeping the links, internal and external in editing menus.

Cf. softpress link illustrating what I tried to explain:
