I’ve had a quick look in Sys Prefs->Keyboard Shortcuts to find and disable Shift F12 which loads Dashboard really slowly. Actually it’s quite annoying - why would you use that?It doesn’t seem to be in there. I want to use this for Quark->Edit Colours. Any pointers chaps?
Shift + (just about any OS-level shortcut) is a trick Apple has in there so you can see the effect happening slowly. It works with Exposé, window minimizing, etc. I don’t know if there is anyway to override it.
In Sys Prefs, under the “Keyboard” tab, you could try toggling the “Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys”. This would free up the F keys allowing you to change the QuarkXPress shortcut as required.
In order to then use the F keys as they were intended, you would then have to hold down the “fn” key at the same time as pressing one of the F keys to invoke its function.
Yes thanks guys. Craig, your idea doesn’t work unfortunately, which is a bummer. Quark ignores Shift F12 and using the FN key just invokes dashboard with or without the Shift key.
I’m amazed that Apple doesn’t give you the option to turn it off, as effectively some keyboard shortcuts within apps can’t be used it would seem.
Thanks Joe. Annoyingly, Quark does not have that function, which is amazing really. This is surprising as Macromedia Freehand had this simple function years ago. There are Xtensions to do it, but they cost about $55.
I’ll just have to continue to use the mouse and Edit/Colours…etc
Maybe it won’t work with Quark, but have you tried adding the keyboard shortcut in the same place you were looking to disable it? In Sys Prefs->Keyboard Shortcuts you can add applications to the list and change the shortcuts.
Right Joe … the edit colours function appears in the Edit menu in the menu bar so is there a convention to ‘anotating’ this, such as Edit/Colours? I have tried Edit Colours and Edit/Colours but that doesn’t work. And disabling F keys reverts to the Volume up function. Weird thing is this was easy in OS9.
Thanks Craig. Well if I switch off “Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys” I still only get a slow dashboard in Quark 7.5 when using “fn-Shift-F12”. So I thought I’d try the same thing in Q8.1 but that has now decided to quit on launch. So I’ll get right on that and report back. Which version of Quark does it work for you?
Joe, I tried that but still only Dashboard, thanks.
Sorted it. Just re-assigned Dashboard to F14, so Shift F12 automatically works now as Edit Colours. It’s only a small thing (as they say), but I didn’t half miss it.
choose ‘Use all F1,F2 etc keys as standard function keys’, as mentioned, but then go to keyboard shortcuts and un-check the shortcuts that are checked for f8-f12. The option to use all F1 etc. still doesn’t allow you to use F8-F12 (you get the dashboard etc.). Had to do this for work related programs and it works perfectly.
