QuickTime Import

Hello All - I am new to Freeway so excuse me if I am missing something easy.

I am trying to import a Quicktime movie for use on a web page. I create the HTML box and have tried to both drag and drop the movie as well as Import it from the File menu. In both cases, I get the first frame to show up as though it was inserted OK, but when I preview it, I get a blank box with a question mark. I have played with the associated actions (Quicktime Extras and Quicktime Ref Movie), but all that has done is provide an opportunity to click something before I get the same blank box.

I have enabled Applescript in Actions as well with no luck. My file is a .mov file that is rather small. I have tried other formats (m4v and 3gp). The 3gp file works, but is too small for use on the site (intended for use on phones over cellular networks). My system is fairly standard, Macbook Pro with Lion running FW5.5.

I’d love to be able to resize it and perhaps have it show a different frame at startup, but first things first, how can I get it to run.

Any help would be appreciated.

The file you are placing is called a Reference Movie. It’s actually just a tiny plain text file with the relative URLs of the various versions of the actual movie embedded in it. The QuickTime plugin uses this file to find the “real” movie, and it uses an algorithm to decide which version to use, based on the local computer’s power and network speed. The question mark means that the plug-in can’t find the other two files. You could try uploading them manually to the Resources folder on your server, but I think there is an Action for using Reference Movies, and if so, it’s built in to recent versions of Freeway. Perhaps someone else has used it and can comment?

If you use the Full .mov file in the FW page you can resize it.

Before importing the .mov file check its size and if it is only a few Kb then it will be a reference movie.

The QT Reference Movie action is there so you can select the appropriate alternate movie file for delivery to mobile devices (reduced size/quality)

Where did the original .mov file come from? If provided then maybe they haven’t given you all you need.

Thanks for the very quick and useful reply’s. The original file came from an export from Apple’s ‘Keynote’ software. The .mov file I was using is only a few kb so it must be a reference file.

I changed the reference to the right .mov movie file and it now works fine. I appreciate the background on how these .mov files work. I am still having a bit of trouble arranging the size on my screen the way I want. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much again for your help.

Post a link to an online example and we can have a look but you should try the Quick Time Extras action.
