Random Image

I am also struggling with the random image action. I would ideally like to use it with a stack as this would allow me to reposition the images as I wish within the frame.

My problem is that I cannot seem to get the stacked items to appear in the action window. I can select files from a folder, but then I don’t have any adjustment options within Freeway.

Am I missing something?

I need to bump this because trying to get this action to work is driving me potty. When I try it I can’t get the same screenshots as the tutorial which shows the action with item 1, item 2, item 3, item 4 down the left hand column, and then individual ticks for img 1, img 2, img 3, img 4. All I can get is item 1 down the side.

I know I am not the sharpest tool in the box, but I just can’t follow how to get this action to work.

If your images are set as layers, stacked and grouped, and not set to combine, then you should see the individual images. But if the images are set to combine, they will appear as a single image (IIRC, the bottom one becomes the name). Click once on the image and look in the Inspector.

I can’t even work out how I make a start. Do I create a graphic box, place a picture in that box, apply the Random Image action to that box and then select each image I want to appear randomly in the action window?

Or, do I have to have all images on the page, stacked, with the action applied to one of those images, or all of those images, or a separate box over the top of those images and apply the action to that?

I can’t work out how I get all four images as part of the Random Action. Am I being dense here?

No, Freeway is giving you both options. If you stack and group, you should see the random options in the Image tab of the Actions palette. If you apply the Action to a single image, then you should see pickers to attach the other random options in the Parameters tab of the Actions palette. If you have applied a link to each image, then you don’t need to do anything else. If you want to specify a link through the Actions interface, then make sure that you switch to the Parameters tab and set the URL for each option there.

OK. As far as stacking and grouping goes this is where I was going wrong.

After stacking the four images on top of each other, I didn’t then marquee them all to group them, which then enabled me to apply the action to the group folder, and I am not entirely sure that the important step of actually grouping the items is made clear in the instructions I found online. So, I have that working.

As for applying the Random Image to a single graphic box. In the action settings, I was selecting my images, but they were tiffs, the same as the other images on the pages which of course Freeway will convert on publishing, but because there are no images to actually publish using this method, the key thing here is they needed to be web friendly format masters (jpegs, gifs, pngs) for this method to work.

I have re-read the instructions for the Random Image action, and to me it just isn’t clear how to properly get this working.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction, Walter.

Those instructions were written when Freeway 3 or 3.5 was still the current version. I agree, they need some updating.

Ah right that would make sense then. Tricky I can imagine with so much information out there, to keep it all up to date, but I would imagine that for the single graphic item, it would have always been the case the file format needed to be browser friendly.

Anyway, I have it working now.

Being a newbie I cannot even find the action “Random Image!” Where, how, help. I am trying to figure out how to stack images on top of one another and then have Random Images happen on the main page. It should be simple, but
then so am I!

thanks in advance,

Where is the action “Random Image” found, please? I have 10 images stacked on top of one another and am stymied for now.

Have you downloaded and installed the action from ActionsForge?

If so then ‘draw’ a graphic item on your FW page. select it and then use Item>Actions>Random Image to apply the action.

Then set the parameters/images in the action palette.
