RE: ScriptyLightbox Status 2010

03-Is it stable with those who still use IE6

I have to ask… is anything?

Seriously though, I wouldn’t expect much from this kind of modern tech in that dinosaur of a browser. Ever.

Hi Keith,

Thank you for your input. Don’t want to get stuck on the IE6 question as it is unfortunately on that still has to be asked. I wish the thing would just dye and go away. Now we have 8 and it changes things and breaks fixes in 6 & 7 and so on. The whole IE issue is a little on the ridiculous side but such is the way of Microsoft… whew, I vented.

I welcome response to my other questions as I believe Walt authored this Action and his stuff has always been top rate. I think I was just trying it when it was still in the development stages. Really would like a Freeway Action to generate the effect. Currently using “Lightview” which is super solid just requires us to do things in a very non Freeway fashion.

For an example of this effect on our site go to: www:sutherlanddesignagency.com/services3.html

Thank You—Team SDA_Dave

Hi Freeway Users Or Author,

Hoping to be able to use the ScriptyLightbox Action. Is there anyone out there using it and is it now solid. The code we are currently using is at the link below.

http://www.nickstakenburg.com/projects/lightview/

While this code is solid, and when I say solid I am referring to most common browsers Mac and PC and yes as far back as IE6, it creates a very manual workflow that defeats the reason for having Freeway. Are agency has 5-5Pro licenses and 4 Dreamweaver CS4 licenses. Would be nice to have this action or another that just works as Dreamweaver is actually simpler given its ability to manage resources directories and such.

Again if someone out there is using it and it is working that would be great to know. As I would love to be doing all this in Freeway.

Thank you to all of you out there who make these actions as this is what really makes Freeway so desirable.

The current version of ScriptyLightbox is 0.2.4. Check the version you
have installed in Freeway by applying the Action to something, and
looking in the Actions palette in the bottom-right corner. If you
don’t have the current version, please do try the latest and see if it
works for you.

The underlying library I use (Lightwindow 2) has been abandoned by its
author for a year or two, and browsers (and Prototype) have changed
somewhat in that timeframe. As such, compatibility is a bit of a
moving target. I get very few complaints, and those who do are having
difficulty with IE or with Flash, both of which are very much a black
box for me.

I have not found another library that loads as many different types of
content as Lightwindow and is still freely licensed (BSD or similar).
If you know of any, please do let me know, as I would be interested in
upgrading the core library to something more recent (or at least
maintained).

Thanks,

Walter

Hi Walt,

Thank you for the update. We will give it a try in the near future but for now we will continue with the code we have. The link in my previous post is for the code we are using, we have found it to be extremely solid. Perhaps you could license this from the author. This feature seems like an action that Freeway should support as it would really give users a much needed tool for displaying content on the web.

(1) The first big drawback is that it uses a version Scriptaculous that conflicts with other Freeway Actions, not sure about prototype.

(2) The second is that it is outside the Freeway work flow.

Thanks aging for your response, let me know if you decide to move forward with Lightview or another supported script.

What about FancyBox, it’s licensed as GPL and supports various images, galleries, iFrame, Flash, etc. It seems to load faster than Scripty LB. Not sure how it will play nice with other actions used by FW.

Thing 1. GPL tends to “poison” other licenses on the same application.
I go as far as LGPL, which allows linking to licensed code without
bringing the whole project into compliance with GPL. I prefer MIT or
BSD or Apache licenses, which are designed to be commercially friendly.

And to respond to TeamSDA – I can’t really get behind using a for-pay
library in an Action I give away for free, and I especially don’t want
to get stuck legally if someone balks at paying their license fee.

Thing 2. This is a jQuery widget, so it won’t work at all with any of
the other FX or Protaculous Actions.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. If you find something that is
liberally licensed and Prototype-compatible, I would be very interested.

Hi Walt,

Always value your posts. While the Free thing is nice, it would be more helpful to end users like us if Freeway or another company offered Actions that are tested and fully functioning at a price. A price of $5.00 to $50.00 dollars for an action that functions and is updated on a regular basis would be invaluable.

Thanks, Team SDA_Dave
