Receiving feeds on a web site

Hi,

Is there a way to receive feeds such as RSS 2.0 or Atom feeds in a window on my FWPro website? I’ve been thinking of channeling a couple of feeds from some sites that are particularly pertinent to my website right into a page. I guess this would mean that somehow my website has a feed reader function, but I don’t know enough about it to say one way or another whether this is doable. I do, however, think this could make a nice addition to the site.

Thanks,
Martin

The ReadFeed Action is for that. Have a look on ActionsForge. The output is an HTML list, and you need to understand a bit of HTML to style it or to change the order and composition of the elements or the layout. But if you can work with that, you can do quite amazing things with it.

That is so cool, Walter. Thank you. I can’t remember the last time I did any HTML myself and I wasn’t that good to begin with. But I’ll bet if I give it a try I might be able to do just enough.

Thanks again,
Martin

Hope you don’t mind me getting on board with this one.

I am caught between two sticks as it were with this one.
I was also looking to have a feed of items from a phpBB forum on the front page of a website.

Problem is phpBB does not do RSS feeds only ATOM and Freeway actions Simple RSS and ReadFeed do not do ATOM only RSS.

Having so much invested in terms of time and energy in both setups I was wondering if there is anyway that both these ends can be made to meet and allow users to combine these apparently disparate setups?

Any inputs would be most welcome. I’m not an expert on phpBB or Freeway softress never mind RSS or ATM feeds but I hope that there is a solution.

Thanks

There’s a new one that does Atom as well: Feed2js - ActionsForge

Thats great Walter. Never heard of this one.

I’ve tried it and its simple to set up. The only issue is the lack of the control of the length of the posts displayed. This would be perfect if I could resolve this aspect of it.

Is this likely as a feature?

Length of the posts? Do you mean to truncate the length of the story description? That’s not controlled in any of the Actions I know of, the right place to change that is in the feed itself (assuming you have control over that).

I’ve resolve this just by taking out the description. Theres enough info in the heading to tantalise people to want to read the full story I hope!

Many thanks Walter.

Another box ticked with the help of your expertise and insight!

I’m not quite unticking this box but just wonder if the links in the feeds should be clickable to take you to the actual forum?
At the moment nothing his happening though the heading is clickable there is not linking to the forum topic or front page.

Is this possible?

Which Action are you using here? Could you post a link where this happens?

Hello Walter,

I’m using the feed2js action.

The site is here:
http://www.thegorbals.co.uk

Its a site in an early stage of development and feeds are something I might like to make more of.

If you’ve been experimenting with the links and you enabled a cache folder, you might want to delete that cache folder entirely until you work this out. Otherwise you have to wait an hour between changes to see the newer version.

Ok, I’ll wait for a bit and see.

Am I correct in thinking that clicking on the Headlines in the feed box should open the particular page with the forum/post it came from?

It should, when I opened your feed in a dedicated RSS reader, they were proper links and they worked. If you look at the example page for the Action, it works there as well. But when I look at the page you posted, and I inspect the links in the Developer Tools, I see that they have no link applied to them at all. So they fall through to being links to the current page (the default if you make a link with no href).

Thats interesting. I guess the question is why this is happening?
Is it something to do with the way the page has been set up at all?

Could you try a new blank page, nothing else on it except the feed element? I’m stumped, and starting over is always a valid troubleshooting exercise.

Hello again Walter,
I have set this page up.

http://www.thegorbals.co.uk/test.html

Still the same issue but may be clearer for you to analyse.

Boggles my mind. It’s a valid feed, according to the feed validator, and I tested it on my server to rule out a difference in PHP or something equally random. I can’t explain this. The only thing I can think of for you to do is to run it through Feedburner first. Set it up on Feedburner to point to your PHPBB feed, then link to the Feedburner URL for that feed.

One thing that I did notice was that I was not able to download the feed with cURL on the command-line, it gave me an invalid connection error. wget was able to download it, though, so no idea what that means. You have tags in the feed, so it ought to work.

I can leave it as it is just now as the feeds are a start even if they don’t link back to the posts.
Just as an aside to this, on the same front page I was wondering if you knew of the reason that the images in the main carousel are not centring in the panel in any browsers? They look fine and centred in the preview in Freeway but in the browsers the images always appear slightly off to the right.
I’ve checked this through and resized the images etc but no change. Any thoughts at all?
Is it worth me starting this as a new thread?

Always a good idea. And make a simple, cut-down page that demonstrates the problem in isolation (no other Actions or markup inserted).
