Recruiters 101

Is it S.O.P. for recruiters to contractually obligate you to only
their agency? Meaning you can’t accept work offers from other
agencies. I’ve been contacted by several (bordering on spam) and out
of sheer curiosity I reluctantly spoke to quite a few and with the
exception of a handful they all expect exclusivity.

I’ve never agreed to such a deal, or been asked to be exclusive, but
then I’ve only dealt with recruiters who were local to me (that I met
in person) and who were trying to place me locally. These spammers are
quite annoying, as they are operating on the dragnet principle, rather
than bringing any value to the deal by means of knowing the parties
involved and trying to make a good match.

Thanks Walter. The ones I’ve spoken with (in person) are local, some
of which don’t require exclusivity so I might give those a closer
look. As for the others, it really struck me as odd that they
essentially want to control you as much as possible. They all seem to
have “some” mandatory rules, some of which I can understand, but I
have my limits of what I’m willing to put up with.

A company who expects that from a contractor better have large wads of cash (and can prove it) because that would be the only reason I would consider it. If you can work out what you would lose in income from other projects during that time period and add that to contract, ok maybe.

If I can have 3+ different agencies finding work for me why in the
world would I limit myself to only one? That’s what I find so amazing
about some of these places. At least now I have a point of reference.
Thanks.
