Refreshing website content

The way that Freeway is supposed to work when publishing is it generates all the artwork that has changed since the last time the document was published and saved. The modification dates for the files are saved in a database alongside the index.html in your Site Folder named _siteinfo. (You can look into that file with a text editor, but it’s not meant to be human-readable.) Then the upload is done, checking the modification dates on the server to see if they are significantly different than the dates calculated by your Mac.

Files that differ significantly in either date or file size are uploaded again.

If anything interrupts the upload, that can cause the whole process to repeat. If your Mac’s motherboard battery dies, and your clock drifts significantly, that can cause the whole thing to repeat. If you move the site folder or art folders around on your local disk, changing the file paths, that can cause the whole thing to repeat.

It’s designed to work like you’d expect – only things that are meaningfully changed are re-uploaded. But it’s an algorithm, not a person, and it doesn’t have any common sense whatsoever, so your mileage may vary.

When I make changes or add new documents to Freeway file the whole 1.6GB of data has to be updated. But only a few new or changed are “dirtied” And I definitely keep away from changing the CSS Menus, that will “dirty” all the pages

Any ideas how I can avoid such large uploads???

Hi Peter,

Freeway only uploads pages that have been changed/dirtied. If it really is the case that only a few pages are dirtied, Freeway will upload just those pages. You might occasionally have problems if an upload is interrupted, as Walter has noted.

What is much more common, however, is that an Action dirties all pages whenever a site is published, so that you suddenly see a bullet in front of every page at the start of publishing. When this happens, all those pages will be reuploaded (when you select Upload, Freeway publishes the site before uploading).

I don’t recall which Actions cause this to happen, but other people may be able to name names. You should be able to find threads which discuss this issue by searching for “dirty” in the Search bar at the top of the FreewayTalk page.
