Relative Page Layout Question

Hi,

I’d like to change a site that is a combination of layers and tables and some inline (I think) to a RPL site. In the material from “What’s new in FW 5.5” it says “Although it’s possible to apply the Relative Page Layout Action retrospectively, it’s best to use it right at the start of your new project.” I thought I’d give it a try on one page anyway to see if I could make it work. Basically I turned on CSS, made all html and graphic boxes layers (by turning on the Layer check box) and applied the Action to the page. Absolute disaster, I’m afraid. (And it took me about 45 minutes to rearrange things so that the page worked again without the Action.)

So my question is, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might best do this conversion? And, if it’s really something that can’t be done well, would it make sense to re-do the site from scratch as an RPL based site? And what I mean by that question is, are the advantages to doing that worth the time and effort?

Thanks for any help.

If your site is already inline (box model) then you don’t need RPL

The best site to convert would be a layered non inline site.

Why not do a ‘Save As’ and work on that version (remembering to select a new Site Folder).

That way you will have the original to revert to if you have a disaster. Also remember that there are certain things that should have the Remove from RPL action applied to them. So if after a preview it is not the way you expected it might be worth removing an element with that action and trying again.

Thanks, David. I should have worked with a copy to begin with, of course. I guess I was just too anxious to give it a try and didn’t think straight. Also, thanks for the tip about removing elements that don’t seem to work right. I read about that, but I’m sure I wouldn’t have thought of it
