Relaunched Site

Hi all!

I’ve not been a terribly active FreewayTalker for quite a while now. After nearly two years of trying to find a direction, a new job, and all sorts of other shenanigans, I’ve decided the best thing I can do is relaunch my freelance design business.

So, after what seems like ages, I finally managed to design a new site, sort out a new identity for my “business”, and uploaded the results yesterday.

http://www.imagic-design.co.uk

I have intentionally kept things simple. I’ve made use of Paul Dunning’s Caxton Action with a free Font Squirrel typeface, but otherwise there are no fancy tricks, glitzy gizmos or clever things. Honest and up front is my motto.

I used the Showcase app to create the portfolio galleries. That page needs a bit of adjustment, but works well enough for now.

I’d appreciate comments, good and bad, and I look forward to being a slightly more active member round here again.

Cheer all

Heather

Looks really nice, and no-nonsense – just as I think of you!

One thing you need to tackle right now is the :visited color for the
links in your navigation bar. It sets to a pale gray on medium gray-
green – too low contrast for my failing eyes. My personal approach to
navigation links is to set the visited color to be exactly the same as
the link color – no difference – since they’re “utility” links, and
going to be used over and over, rather than being hit once and never
seen again.

Glad to see you back among the freelance masses! Is this in addition
to, or in place of, the latest dalliance with “regular” employment?

Good point. I’ll sort that out later. I know what you mean about failing eyes, too! =oD

Well, having been searching for over a year, sending off applications all over the place, I haven’t managed anything more than a month of freelancing at a big studio 40 miles away. That helped, but I can’t rely on it. Seemingly unable to find a proper full-time job, I have decided to join the forces of the freelancers again.

Of course, if a good full-time job comes by, I’ll try for it. You never know. =o)

Cheers

Great to see you back Heather! I’m back too; after a few years of RapidWeaver, I’ve returned to the fold.
I like the site, and I think it’s great that you think (as do I) that it’s not necessarily the job of a web site to be flashy. Having said that, I reckon it could be just a tad more eye-catching; it might be my age, but the colour scheme reminds me of the ration books that were still (just) around in the 50s when I was a kid
You’ve got a great lot of good work on there though, really impressive.

best wishes,

Paul Bradforth

I agree on the rollover color being off. Seems like it should be a darker green instead of going full white or “grey-ish” in areas that don’t have a dark color behind them. I also agree too that the site needs a kick up in style there.

I like your work too. I especially dig the photo restorations as I remember spending hours in college doing that over and over for projects. Plus those illustrations are clean and nice. You are talented. Thanks for sharing the site.

Thanks, Paul and Dan!

My original colour choices involved a lot of cool greys, which I thought would not work at all well. So I spent some quality time with my Pantone swatches and settled on the olive greens. With hindsight, perhaps they could have been a tad brighter!

I will give the site some more thought in the coming days, and see what I can do to brighten it up a bit.

And thank you for the kind words about my work. It does sometimes need an outsider to remind you that you are quite good at what you profess to do. It is appreciated.

Cheers all

Heather - nice to have you back. I remember when I joined the ‘clan’ here a years ago and was always on FWtalk trying to get my old head round Freeway. There was, and still is a lot of friendly, helpful and talented people here, of which you were part. You helped me out on more than one occasion I remember, but I have to say I love your photography. You have a real eye for it, some great stuff there.

Hello Folks. I’ll ask the usual forgiveness for probably asking an old (and probably already answered) question regarding Showcase, so please forgive. Now then, can I change the font color in a Showcase (want a white font for a black page)?. Don’t see that option in the inspector. And, having visited Heather’s very nice website and gallery, can I change the font?
Thank you, Marcos

Hi Marcos

You will find a ton of options to change the appearance of your slideshow in Freeway. Open the Actions palette, and select the Showcase item on your page. Explore.

There’s definitely a caption colour section in both the thumbnail and large image sections.

Have fun!
