Simple PHP Blog

Anyone had a look at this? http://www.simplephpblog.com/

Was considering giving it a try, but there are a lot of php files involved…

I used that a number of years ago for Softpress. It works really well, and it wasn’t that hard to skin to match the rest of the site. There are a lot of files, but you don’t have to touch very many of them to do something with it.

Ok, i’ve done my basic install test. Result: This is really pretty sweet!

Very simple install, and straight forward features. Lots of configuration preference possibilities, even down to changing the color pallet.

Downside: It’s technically still in “alpha” release. The thorns show up when you try and do obvious things to the themes settings. For example, the Modern theme ignores any attempt to change the graphic header. Luckily someone on their forum was kind enough to post a fix. There does not seem to have been any new development on it for some time so keep that in mind if it is missing something you need.

If you want to host your own blog, and don’t want to mess with the whole template process, this is a pretty good solution. The end result looks very professional. For a free blog it’s quite good…as long as you don’t want a totally custom theme. If you do, count on many hours pouring through the code.

Walt: Did you have a go at reconfiguring a theme to create a new one, or did you just adjust the preferences and colors?

I took the standard theme, tweaked some of the basic settings, then replaced the header graphic. I did have to do a little hacking in the php to hide some of the login stuff, if I recall correctly. I also did a bit of changing things with CSSEdit.

It fit pretty well from the start, though, and for the needs we had at the time, it was nearly perfect.
