Simple site search

Hello

I am having a bit of a problem finding the page action on FWY 5.5

Can somebody help? It’s not where it is supposed to be according to the manual … I pull down Menu/page/page actions but it’s not there.

Hi John-Paul,
The action is split into three parts; a folder action that does the
data collection, an item action that is applied to the search field,
and a freestanding action that when sketched to your page will contain
the search results.

Try this;

  1. Select Window/Actions to open the actions palette.
  2. Click on the root (home) folder of your site in the site panel so
    the folder is selected.
  3. Click on the + (plus) icon in the actions palette and choose
"Simple Site Search’ from the list.
This will apply the folder action to the home folder and any child
pages will have their text added to the internal search database.

I’ll take a closer look at the documentation now and see if this needs
correcting.
Thanks for the feedback.
Regards,
Tim.

Hi John-Paul,
I’ve just checked the ‘Whats New In Freeway 5.5’ PDF that ships with
Freeway 5.5 and I think you may have misread it. It says “…select
the Site Folder, go to Page>Folder Actions and choose Simple Site
Search from the list”. The Folder action menu item is third from the
bottom of the menu.
You can also use the actions palette as I mentioned earlier.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Tim.

Ah yes I was a little further up looking at Page Actions not Folder Actions.

Second question. Assuming that most people will want to put this in a navigation bar so search shows on every page, how can the results be populated on a new page?

Hi John-Paul,
You can place the results action anywhere on your site and the search
box (or boxes) will simply locate it on your site and load this page
with the search results. You can have as many search boxes as you like
in a site but can only have a single search results panel.
Regards,
Tim.

Thank you!

Unfortunately I think where the a site search falls down as a pro tool is simply lack of statistics which one can obtain via 3rd party search tools which can be easily integrated such as Atom and Google.

Hi John-Paul,
Agreed the Simple Site Search action can’t provide some of the search
analytics that you can get from a hosted solution but the ease of
setup, use, and customisation make it very easy to get a search
facility up and running on your web site or even on an offline web
site (one provided on a CD-ROM for example).
Regards,
Tim.
