Site Mapper Action

I have created an xml site map with this action for a new site. How long should it be before I can see this has been recognised by Google and is visible in their Webmaster tools? In the past I have clicked on their button ‘submit a site map’ and get an indication in the status column as to what the state of play is (red cross, green tick, yellow triangle). For this new site I am being told no site has been submitted. Any body else tried this action yet and got a result?

Richard

Still not seeing it (on this site http://www.honfleur-chambre.com/)

Also tried it on an existing site where it did get recognised but I have the following warning

Network unreachable: robots.txt unreachable
We were unable to crawl your Sitemap because we found a robots.txt file at the root of your site but were unable to download it. Please ensure that it is accessible or remove it completely.

I have not placed a robots.txt file - (but I have put a video on the site from Daily Motion.) How do I find this file and bin it? The site is http://www.simonnelhermitte.com/

Hi Richard,

It can take quite a while (2-4 weeks) for anything to appear on Google’s servers. Generally happens at the end of the month.

Hi Richard

Something I noticed while looking at your sitemap file

http://www.simonnelhermitte.com/simonnel'hermittepastels.html

You have apostrophes in some of your file names - you should avoid these and stick to web safe characters such as - hyphens and _ underscores

Not saying these are affecting your sitemap issues - just better to avoid them.

Hmm - I know Google can drag their feet but in this instance it seems the action was not submitting. (it did just fine with another site). I submitted manually and is fine (date errors apart which I see you are working )

Hi Dave and thanks for looking

I have weeded these out and Google has stopped talking about a mysterious robot.txt file so at least I don’t have to go looking for something invisible! (to me anyway). Just the date error showing now (or not actually as I am using a Sitemap built elsewhere for the present just to see if it is all OK - and it is I get my green tick)

Hi Richard,

What I mean is, after submitting a sitemap or site through Google’s anonymous services they won’t actually index your site until their monthly run (usually at the end of the month).

If you submit it through Webmaster Tools then you will see the sitemap but you won’t see any information in the other areas until they have actually indexed your site.
