site search app

Hi folks,

I might be doing a website (fingers crossed) for a company that may require a search facility for their 45 pages principally of text. All of a technical nature and the sort of stuff specialists might require searching within.

The two search applications I’ve come across are ‘Atomz Search’ and Intrasite.
Has anyone used Atomz ? I’m looking for an example of the results page, nothing on Atomz own site unfortunately. Intrasite do have an example and it seems pretty neat.
Advert free and free are the criteria but happy if a license is required.

Any other thoughts would be welcome.

thanks in advance,

s

Have you considered FW’s built-in offering?

If you’re using 5.5+, try the Simple Site Search:

Hi Dan and Dave,

I did look at it but it seems to only use the meta description (applied to each page) rather than the whole page text, which did seem a bit odd and pointless but I could have read this wrong of course.
The ‘tour’ that I hadn’t seen doesn’t illuminate the situation much better.

The search result I did read on Freewaytalk led me to Atomz and Intrasite.

thanks,

s

The Simple Site Search Action will trawl the entire site scraping pages looking for textual content to add to it’s internal database. It will pull in any text found on the page and use this for the search. It can do this without the need to add descriptive page titles or descriptions but adding these will enhance the results users get back as will show up in the results page.
You can read more about the Action starting on page 21 of the 'What’s New in Freeway 5.5" guide - http://www.softpress.com/images/uploads/Whats_New_In_FW55.pdf

Another option would be to use a self-hosted search tool like Sphider - http://www.sphider.eu/ and can find further discussion at http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/50559
Regards,
Tim.

Hi Tim,

Your quite right about Freeway’s simple search and I did misread but its not that explicit in the manual, nor explain what it does. I’m not sure if I wish to add descriptions x45 but I would have page titles as a matter of course. Simple search is nice and easy to implement, however. Though I do like the method of Intrasite.

I’ll have a look at Sphider And thanks Frank for lining up another to look at. Spoilt for choice now.

many thanks,

s

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll see what can be done about the description in the manual to make things a little clearer. In the meantime let us know how you get on with Intasite if you use it as it looks good from what I can see on their site.
Regards,
Tim.
