Sitemaps

I have been reading up on sitemaps in the softpress knowledge base and it is confusing, do I just use the site mapper action or should I generate an xml file and submit this seperately to google? My confusion arises from the statement in the knowledge base that states ‘do not confuse the site mapper action with the google sitemaps’???

The sitemapper actions creates the xml file for you, it is then uploaded with your site. In the actions pallet, there is an option that is available once the site has been uploaded to submit the sitemap to the search engines.

Thanks but I know this and was OK until I read the support page on the subject which states that google sitemaps should not be confused with normal sitemaps, why is this?

Regards

Normal site maps in the context of having a page for the user to see “map” or directory of all the pages of your site.

The Site Map action - which is accessed using Insert>Action Items>Site Map - is an on page visual indicator of the web site structure so that visitors can have access to a quick and visual set of links to all your pages.

As said already - nothing to do with Google etc.

It must have something to do with google or it wouldn’t indicate it is submitting to goggle when you use the action.

I understand how to use the action and how to create a sitemap using the site softpress recommend.

My question again is what is the difference between a google sitemap and the action generated sitemap?

The softpress knowledge base quite clearly states they are different and not to be confused.

My main concern is google allows you in the webmaster tools to submit a sitemap, so which one is best, the action generated site map or the one generated using http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ and also will it confuse matters if you have the two different ones in your root directory?

The confusion comes from the fact that Freeway has two Actions called Site Map that are completely different.

One basically creates the same thing as the Navigation Map does, only automatically. As others have said, it’s a “map” of your site as in pages and navigation.

The Sitemapper Actions are used on pages and folders, and will create (I think) what you are looking for.

Check in the manual to see the difference.

Please correct me if I’ve stated something incorrectly.

The difference is that the FW ‘Site Mapper’ action does the creation and the submission for you.

The ‘Site Map’ action - described above - generates this on a FW page as part of in site navigation.

what is the difference between a google sitemap and the action generated sitemap?

See above for ‘Site Map’ content Not to be confused with the ‘Site Mapper’ generated XML file.

google allows you in the webmaster tools to submit a sitemap, so which one is best, the action generated site map or the one generated using http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ and also will it confuse matters if you have the two different ones in your root directory?

The ‘Site Mapper’ action creates the sitemap.xml and submits it for you.

You can use a service like xml-sitemaps.com but the whole point of any action is to make it easier for you ie No 3rd party sitemap.xml creation and No manual submission.

And yes having 2 different sitemap.xml files would be a problem!

Any clearer now?

I kinda had what you are saying from the start, I was successfully using sitemapper action, it was when i was checking in ‘knowledgebase’ that I was thrown as softpress’s coverage is at best confusing, especially as they make it very unclear about the sitemap and sitemapper being different and then throw the grenade of ‘don’t confuse sitemaps with google sitemaps’

I must say this wild goose chase has been fun and thanks for all your help and mostly Daves patience.

regards

As long as it is all clear now - and this hopefully will serve to alleviate any future confusion.
