I heard this morning that Bert Jansch had passed. One of my earliest musical memories is trying to learn The Pentangle’s version of “Turn Your Money Green”. Bert made it sound so easy – trust me, it wasn’t.
Happily, Apple has a crystal-clean version of Sweet Child for sale, to replace my scratched up double LP, so I’m listening and remembering.
I’m sorry to say I never heard of Bert Jansch until your email.
I just listened to him now. What a beautiful voice.
Just wanted to share that hearing him reminded me of
another singer that meant a great deal to me, his name
was Phil Ochs.
At one moment in time, Phil Ochs was more
well known than, Bob Dylan. And those two had a
friendly relation that snapped when the both
of them were riding in a car, and Dylan told Phil,
that he wasn’t a songwriter, that he was a journalist.
Tragically and quite sadly, the end of Phil’s life did
not end well. I saw him at Carnegie Hall in the late 60’s
(that would be the 1960’s and I still miss his voice
and the courage of what his was singing about.
