Softpress Freeway 5 Public Beta with CSS menu support

I still can’t believe what a huge pain in the neck it is to create forms in Freeway. With Rapidweaver all have to do is insert my email address and upload it to the site. Its Apple like and just works. In Freeway I’ve lost endless hours without success trying to create even simple forms and eventually ended up paying a specialist company to install them for me. Surely version 5 of a professional application could offer something at least as good as Rapidweaver which costs less than $50.

There are some pretty formidible issues with providing form processing scripts in an app. You need to provide scripts that run on at least:
PHP

ASP

.NET

JSP

PERL

and which provide the same functionality across as many servers as possible to ensure that as many people are covered. Now if RapidWeaver covers all these bases, then good on them. However, I suspect that you are limited to just PHP and a few simple controls. What happens if you want to do more?

I am a fan of Forms2Go - which covers ASP, PHP and PERL for form processing. Just show it your Freeway form, tell it what email address it’s to go to, and it creates the PHP code for you.

It does more as well - verification of fields, database insertion. It’s very useful, and it’s employed on some of the forms on the Softpress site.

There is a tutorial on the Softpress site as well:
http://www.softpress.com/products/Fun/formstogo.php

There are also a number of PHP Actions ready and waiting to let you insert code into your site if you want to roll your own PHP.

How many add-on’s to you have to buy to get Rapidweaver close to some of Freeways flexibility?

Rapidweaver is an application intended primarily for amateur users really who don’t want all the bells and whistles or cost of something like Dreamweaver yet they still manage to provide attractive looking forms that will allow attachments for example in seconds. Perhaps I am reading this wrong but every time I look for a solution with Freeway the answer seems to be that I need to find a 3rd party developer for a way forward and generally at additional cost.

Probably less than the cost of Freeway.

Do you know what method they make the forms work? I would be interested to find out.

There are a few features like simple one tick RSS activation and forms in Rapidweaver which Freeway doesn’t have. Rapidweaver is more flexible than you might imagine.

I honestly don’t know the mechanics under the hood but the page appears to be PHP. Most web hosts seem to include PHP these days.

Ah found it, Rapidweaver forms use PHP, so you need a web hosting account that runs PHP to create forms.

This means that the Free “PHP feedback form action” will work with the same web hosting constraints as Rapidweaver. But I must admit, not in the same ultra simple manner. But Freeway gives more design flexibility.

The PHP feedback form is very simple to use. Apply the action and fill out a few fields…

Simple is only good if it works and I’ve wasted hours in Freeway with no luck. Why can’t the developers at least give us a Rapidweaver like option?

I’ve only ever had one problem with the action and it was my fault for not specifying an error page - as I haven’t seen how easy and effective the RW method is, I can’t comment. But as you say, if the technology is there to make it simpler then why not.

I’d like to point out one sentence on the beta download page:

“may not represent the quality or feature set of the release”

So let’s not get too in a twist about missing features just yet, hmm?
