Some critic input please

Hello,

I hate to post this here, but as yet I am lacking volunteer friends and family to help me evaluate this site.

This is the first site I have done for a paying client, and though I did quite a bit of cross checking she is getting feedback that it is not appearing/functioning correctly.

http://www.giftofanger.com

I took great pains to get a good compromise between platforms and browsers, but apparently the results are not as I saw them. I suspect a PC user is having the problem, so anyone with a few minutes that has that capability - your critique is very invited.

Any, for that matter critique is invited. The hours I have spent viewing and tweaking this site has left me somewhat blind creatively and objectively.

In particular, I tried to make a site that would expand from about 800 pix across (at 100% - I have to go back and read how to lock in text again) to larger viewing sizes and maintain structure and a decent look.

Listed was: Text overrun, blurry text, poor sound/low volume on the mp3 (what can I do if those are the files I am given?). I am aware of the image on the first page needing cleaned up - it is just so much better than the one it replaced.

Thanks, as always, in advance for any and all help.

Frank H.

Hi, on Safari, Firefox works and looks good, all links also works
fine, only multimedia takes longer to download, in overall is a nice
and functional site. Not check on Explorer. KC

Hi Frank,

(I’m using Safari 5.1 for this review…)

  1. On the menu left margin, the rollovers with 2 lines (Review & End… Coming Soon…) need to breath… Increase the height of every frame for all buttons so that the 2-line text doesn’t appear crammed. (you might also want to extend a bit the entire menu frame…)

  2. On the Multimedia & Print page: Why not keeping the same master layout than all other pages? - Also, their is a bleu frame appearing around the Facebook and LinkedIn icons (in addition to a bleu text) - The text ““These are a few of the many recent interviews Dr. Cannon has given.”” is written in a very small font size. If this is an intro line to content, you might want to have it a bit more visible.

  3. The “Coming Soon” menu frame is about 5px further spaced than the other frames above in the navigation.

  4. There is an empty frame/rollover appearing underneath the “Coming Soon” menu.

  5. the “Coming Soon” page seems to have a proper height compare to all other pages with minimal content (with exception of the “Reviews & Endorsements” page that has more content in term of length within the page). So, you might want to be consistent and keep the same page dimensions for most pages if their content is not long enough for a scrolling action…

  6. You might want to link all pictures of the book (and even the text of its title) to the pop-up Amazon window… (The goal of this site being to sell the book… I guess.)

  7. Finally, is Marcia Cannon a Sith-Lord? → “Use your anger to be more powerful…” (Just kidding! lol)

Besides those points, the site is quite operational.
Regards
D

Thanks very much DaveW,

Much of this is the kind of thing that I miss as a result of having stared myself to blindness.
A few of the items you mention caused me to slap my forehead - I thought I fixed that!

If I might bother you further, in 2) you bring up some issues that are the result of much time and frustration. To skip to them:

In regards to the text size, that reduction was a result of safari not responding the same to the text as Chrome and FF - chrome is always small and FF a little larger than the preview but mostly right on. Safari text is larger and seems than the text of Chrome and FF, and kept pushing the text and box into overruns of sort. I know I’ve got something wrong if you’re using Safari to review and seeing it very small. I have tried to calibrate all browsers with the same text font/size according to SoftPress knowledge base.

Any thoughts are appreciated. THANKS so much for your review, thats what I was looking for!

May the force be with you.

: )

Hi Frank,

You are welcome.
About #1)…
Perhaps you might want to use a padding for every box/frame of your navigation menu. That will give some esthetic structure to your menu. Use a padding of 2px or 3px…
(You seem to have a lot of real-estate on that page to afford a little padding)
About #2)…
Since that text is not really essential to any SEO, why not create it as a graphic text instead of a HTML text?

For the resizing, you might find interesting the tutorial provided by Walter here: http://freewaycast.com/screencasts/view/20-flexible-inline-objects

and there: http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/80623

Let us know once you have updated your site…

Cheers
D.
