Spam and email addresses

What’s the current thinking on avoiding spam, whilst having email addresses on a website?

I only put an e-mail address on a page if I can either control the viewership of that page, or if the client really insists. Any form of masking is an arms race, not a real solution. Even a graphic box with the text as a pixel-based picture will fall to the “room full of underpaid people” threat. Use a form, and add a honeypot field to the form (built in to both Actions for user-reply forms) and you are well on your way to getting less of this. But you will still get messages from the room full of people. There’s really no way around that except to not allow contact.
