Here’s a topic I have railed on about at length in the past, given the A List Apart treatment:

tl;dr: Make your form elements look “hollow”, like they could contain something. Make your buttons look like they might be something you could press. Failure to do these (perhaps in slavish devotion to the current “flat” hotness) courts disaster.
