Target Attribute Hoopla

Occasionally I find interesting articles such as this one <http://tinyurl.com/nmdury/

on the so-called “evils” of opening new windows with the target
attribute as opposed to using js and why Strict is the only doctype
that should be used (mm-hmm…yeah, OK). While I understand the
argument it sounds a bit overblown. Chicken Little, anyone?

Curious as to what others think.

I really dislike taking control away from the user. I try to keep it
all in one window, and not break the back button, whenever I can.

I tend to expect external links to open in a new window and find it very annoying when, after I’ve closed the window containing the external site, I find that they haven’t. I guess that’s a good reason to switch to FF or change the default behaviour in Safari to open new windows in a new tab…

I completely disagree that strict is the only doctype to use though.

I keep one thumb over the control key so I can easily open any link in
a new tab is I need to.

Tim.

Me too. There’s little to support the author’s statement in the
article, other than the fact strict doesn’t allow for the target
attribute which seems to be a big rub for him. Perhaps the author
knows something I don’t. It wouldn’t be the first time. ; )

Especially when looking at posted links here!
