Text Flow

Hi,
Is anyone else experiencing problems with Paul’s new version of the Text Flow plugin for FW 5. I can’t get it to work I just keep getting java script errors. I just checked the old version in FW 4 and that is still working fine.

Hi Richard could you remember what the JavaScript error said?

The only reason I ask is because there is a known bug which which has been reported, that causes JavaScript errors in actions that were fine in 4. The problem/bug that I encountered was that it wasn’t consistent across multiple documents, and only errored once I had closed down the document and then reopened it. I did sort of get round it by removing the the action, clearing the JavaScript error saving and closing the file and then reopening it back up again and the reapplying the action so I could do a publish. and this worked in my situation but once I closed the doc down again, then next time I opened it, the script error returned.

This may not be the same error as you are getting but if you could take a note of what the error message says I would imaging Paul and Softpress would be grateful.

kind regards max

Hi Max,

The error pop up I keep getting is headed “Java Script Error” “The path has no properties”.

Just on a hunch I created a site folder (I hadn’t bothered before as I was only testing). To my surprise it started working - no error!

I have informed Paul of this but I have no idea why that might have changed things.

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Paul
This is the same script error as I had, so I am guessing it is the same.
I am sure Softpress will be on the case and be stomping on this pesky bug
and have it all stamped out soon

It sounds to me as though you don’t have the Action installed in
Freeway 5. When you open a Freeway document and are missing one or
more Actions, Freeway will carry on as if you did, using a copy of
the Action that’s cached inside the Freeway document itself. This
works fine for simple one-file actions. But anything that references
an external JavaScript file would fail, because that external file
structure (the additional files referenced within the original
Action) would not be cached.

Try downloading and installing the Action directly into 5, using the
“drag over the Dock icon” method or following Paul’s instructions (in
case it’s not packaged in a bundle). You may have to put a particular
folder into your /Users/yourshortname/Library/Application Support/
Freeway 5 folder (whew!).

The action is definitely there. The first thing I did when I hit the problem was to remove it and re-install it. Also I never had the older version of the action in FW 5. This was the first time FW 5 has had the action installed.

There may be a version cached in your document that “thinks” it is
newer than the one you installed in Freeway. Try removing the effect
entirely, publish the page, and then re-apply the Action to the item.
Also consider sending your file to Softpress for dissection. Write to
support[at]softpress.com, and send the file to files[at]softpress.com.

Walter I tried your suggestion of removing the effect and publishing and then re applying the action and it does work. I even repeated the test with a brand new document, but until I set up the Site Folder I got the java script errors. But like I said in my reply to Max when I created a site folder it started to work - even if I don’t select File > Publish Site. With FW 4 and the old text flow action I could test without setting up a site folder or publishing. It isn’t a problem as I now know how to get it to work but do you think it is worth sending a copy of the page to SP anyway?

It couldn’t hurt to try sending a document to Softpress.

HI,
apparently you need to have a Site Folder set up. This is because the preview system requires somewhere to write the preview file, and that is usually next to the Site Folder.

I’ll look at working around this problem in the future.
