Today I started working with FW 6. Changed my fields on my contact page by adding placeholder text. Is there also a way to add placeholder text to the textarea?

Yes - Select the Text Area and use Item>Extended to bring up the Extended dialogue box.
Under the tab enter the name/value pair of
placeholder/whatever_text_you_want_to_appear
OK dialogues and Done
