If anyone would like to comment?

(It has Max’s wonderful WebYep actions so the client can easily edit parts of his site).

Dear Ralfy - can you share some links to your work?
I feel its only fair when offering such scathing criticism to also offer
examples of what you take to be exemplary sites.

If the SP site were an example of great complexity it might be a sad thing
for everyone who asks how can I do that? - only to be given such specialised
instructions that they cant follow.

However I join with yours and Keith’s idea for showcasing.

Freeway serves a wide range of needs - and the fact that people with little
web code savvy can design and maintain workable presentable and attractive
sites for themselves is also part of its appeal - whether using CSS or table
based positioning. Yes that me - still happily plodding along in table-land

all the best
Brian

PS - Its not just that I’d have to study and understand a whole lot more -
but that even if I did there seems to be so much more display anomalies with
CSS positioning that I’d have to learn a lot more tweaking.
But maybe that is a false perception?

The new Softpress home page does Freeway no favours. The design they chose for
the example of what can be done with Freeway is very amateur looking. In no
way does it reflect the complex CSS driven sites that can be created using the
software. Rather it looks like a site a kid might produce using a Frontpage
template.

I agree with Keith’s comment above about a Showcase gallery. Maybe this could
feature as the new home page with rotating images of the best, most
professional looking sites. Would also be a nice reward for the designers and
encourage submissions of these kinds of sites.

My son, Sam, designed this and I implemented it, with a bit of fiddling, in Freeway 4. It is just a design concept, but I like the way it stretches if the window is resized, and also handles different font sizes in the browser fairly nicely.

Bin-Ra,
I don’t consider my criticism of the SP home page to be particularly scathing, I like to think of it as constructive, but I appreciate that it is only fair that I post a link to a site I have produced.

This is my most recent web project and was completed in FW4…

These three sites may be of interest. Two are a combination of Freeway and Slideshow Pro.

The one for Creative Lighting uses graphic text.
The Danielle Fox Design site uses Max’s brilliant Webyep app to enable client editing, which has been pain free and easy to set up.

http://www.pichaphoto.com

Another interesting point…these sites were created in a remote part of Tanzania in East Africa, using a satellite internet connection.

Freeway certainly is covering the entire globe!

I daresay you didn’t mean it as such ralfy but I doubt anyone compared to an
amateur with Front page would feel a lot of respect - and you are writing
also to them when you write here.

But I’m glad you aren’t grinding axes.
I don’t know how to evaluate your site except as a user experience and as a
minority of possibly one, my opinions aren’t more than just that. It all
looks carefully executed and easy to use and understand.

Thanks for friendly rejoinder.

all the best

Why is it that looking at your site, Ralphy, I see something very
close in format to that shown on the Softpress Site?!

Actually I agree with you: for your site is more complex, yet easy to
navigate through the details. The over simplification of the example
on the Softpress Home Page gives the impression that it is only in the
same league as iWeb and RapidWeaver, both excellent in what they do
but nowhere near as professional and flexible as Freeway. It’s what
you might appeal to a first time ‘Express’ user.

From a marketing standpoint this should perhaps illustrate a couple
of more complete designs, if only as thumb nails, if only to highlight
the full capabilities of Freeway Pro.

Everyone one has their own ideas on what is good design - mine I rate
as simple and effective, with a couple of examples here:

An early one: http://www.blythevalley.com/index.html

and industrial one: http://www.luhrfiltergb.com/index.html

And more recently: http://www.crystalclearmemories.co.uk/

Not necessarily my best work, but they give you an idea of what
Freeway can do.

I totally aggree … it’s simplistic and cheap looking. Kind of ‘nephew-art’ as we call it. To be honest, I very much liked the http://www.freewaynord.com website. They are rebuilding right now, but it allready looks promising.

I agree. I think the Softpress site in general is cluttered and amateur looking. There isn’t enough continuity through the site and it just doesn’t show Freeway off in the best light… IMHO!

I think the background CSS example page is a particularly bad example.

I understand what you might be saying but I got into Freeway as a
total newbie because it didn’t look scary and that’s what I think the
home page conveys. Looking at other software I just shied away from
the scary, complicated look therefore they lost me. I got into
Freeway and now am about to move up to Pro.

What are these softwares that ‘polish’? You seem to be under the
impression that the software you use to design websites is
responsible for the look and feel of them. It isn’t so. If you have
the ability to design a great site, it doesn’t matter much what you
use to do it with.

I get really sick of people writing to me about my site and saying
‘wow, great shots, what sort of camera do you use?’. Like it matters.

Hi Paul

I took a look at your websites and they are great. I’m basically a capable beginner on Freeway Pro. How do you make the images so that they can’t be dragged from the webpage and dropped onto the desktop?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Adam,

That’s quite a jump, from 2008 to the present day! I’m not actually sure you’re writing to me, as the bit that says ‘Hi Paul’ is quoted, and not part of your current message. Assuming you are though:

I don’t know when you saw my site, but it’s been a long time since it contained any pictures, so that bit doesn’t apply any more. I can say though that I’ve never made my pictures ‘undraggable’ in my life, which makes me wonder if it’s really my site you’re talking about?

I was amazed by how snotty I was in my reply to John-Paul! I still stand by what I said, but I wouldn’t be quite so acerbic these days, really…

best wishes,

Paul Bradforth

There are methods to stop pictures being downloaded from your site but none that are truly effective.

Basically if it can be viewed then it can be downloaded and the only secure way to protect an image is not to post it online in the first place.

There is an action called ‘Image Guardian’ that goes some way to helping but is not totally effective. Tim’s Action costs a few $ but might give you some peace of mind.
