Thinking of "adopting" Freeway - need advice please

Hello all -

I have looked in the FAQ and have found nothing that answers my question so perhaps forum members could provide an answer or point me to where the answer lies on the Freeway website.

My question:

I have an existing many-page website with many sub-folders. Do I have to start from scratch or does Freeway or Freeway Pro have a facility, that once I create a master style sheet, I can import the data and images from my old non-Freeway html files?

Or do I have to do it all manually? I’m 55 years old so be gentle…LOL

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve from Ontario, Canada

Hi Steve… there are ways to get html into freeway but it’s not really the answer, not unless you have no intention of changing that HTML.

The big difference in Freeway from other programmes is Freeway is an HTML compiler and programmes like dreamweaver are HTML editors. So in Freeway the environment you are working in is not inside the HTML code. Its a bit like quark, when you hit print quark generates a Postscript file though it doesn’t create the quark file in postscript.

HTML import is one of the biggest talked about problems, and even though a lot has been improved, I cant see this particular area being addressed in the near future to any great degree.
So the realistic answer to your question is if you want freeway to be able to change items in your HTML then unfortunately you are going to have to remake it.
Probably not the answer you hoped for.

Kindest regards max

While what max says is 100% true, one of the great things about Freeway is how easy it is to create sites with it. Depending on your existing site, remaking it may not be the worst thing that happens to you. In fact, it might be a great opportunity to give your site that makeover you’ve been meaning to do.

To recreate an existing site, see this article.

While I agree with Joe, to a point, FW is not really setting you on
the same foot as with DW-users when going after jobs…

FW-user candidate vs DW-user candidate. Employer wants you to work
with existing site and make changes to the design but also the code.
FW-user needs to explain about FW, what it can do, the ease of use -
all that - and that you need to use BBEdit as well, but the employer
hears bells in their head and says that this will require more time
and money to do compared to the DW-user who can step right in and
open the file and start working in it… graphics and code in one.

I’ve encountered this many, many times when going after contracts to
redo corporate sites… In the end, I’ve stopped trying to get
contracts with organizations like that, using FW, and have instead
pushed full, true CMS-based sites, using Joomla, or ModX instead.

Cheers!
James

Thanks for the responses folks! I guess I had better do some more homework before I decide what to do!

I reckon its worth a trial with the free demo just to see how easy it is to
begin this - using the KB reference that Joe gave. You may be the proverbial
duck taking to water!
I often think that the approach taken is at least half the job and when I
tried the various web apps on the market Freeway just brought out the best
in me whereas the others were somehow making me work against my grain.

But some things only become clear in the doing.

all the best
Brian
