to many redirects

Hi All

Can some body explain what ‘to many redirects’ means in plain English. Have to pass this on to my client.

Do you mean too many redirects? If you have to pass it on to your client, it’d be as well to get the plain English correct, no?

Here’s what Apple has to say: “When trying to view a website using Safari, you may see the alert message: “Could not open the page. Too many redirects occurred trying to open (website name).” This may occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page, which is then redirected to open the original page.”

I’ve also had this happen when the local ISP gets too clever with
routing with sites that redirect. In that case there were UK and US
target sites . The UK site didn’t have a UK based domain but was a
sub-domain of the US one. The target company has Internet gateway
connections in many countries. The primary was the US one, and it
re-directed UK visitors to the UK site. The ISP somehow routed that
back to the US site. My client site couldn’t get through with their
wide-pipe ISP but I could using a modem to my ISP from the same
office.

Not likely to affect smaller sites like ‘ours’, but if you’re hosted
by a multinational with multiple Internet gateway points it’s
something to bear in mind.

Hi Paul

The spelling is from my client but I will correct it before I reply to him.

So, am I correct in saying that the problem lies with the links on ‘Google’ and not with the hosting company.

Just one question. How do we stop this from happening?

Also, thanks for your reply David

If you can post a link (or send it privately) to demonstrate the
problem, I could look at it in Firebug and maybe see what’s happening.
I have seen this problem in the past when a 404 page is missing.
(Catch-22, see? The server tries to redirect to the 404 page, but it
is missing, so it tries to redirect to the 404 page, ad infinitum…)
If you have access to your server’s access and error logs, you will be
able to see exactly why this is happening – anyone on the outside
will only be able to muster an intelligent guess.

Hi Walter

Sorry, I can’t post a link as I can not find a trace of the problem when I have gone into Google. It’s been very hard getting information from my client as to what is wrong. I have just checked the error log on the server but it has nothing listed. It’s blank. The site in question is http://www.lakeside-fishandchips.com

Thanks for your help

Then you might look in the access log and search for the status code
404 or 500.

Actually, I mis-spoke. Look for 302 or 301 redirects. Lots and lots of
them in a row. Copy and paste a few to Pastie or Gist and I may be
able to figure this out for you.

Not limited to…

Worth your while getting someone to proof it for you - it can be very difficult to spot stuff if you know what it should say.

Something else you may want to consider

There is no indication that the take away menu can scroll when viewing with iOS
