transparent png and IE - compatible?

check these sites on a pc and mac (if you can):

http://www.smite-a-mite.com

http://www.pesttrappa.com

You will notice a few rounded corners that, on the Mac, appear correctly whereas in IE they appear square with a rounded lighter non-transparent area within. They are set up as png html background images.

Any idea what’s going on?

Are they png millions of colours?

Do you have the IE6/7 compatibility option on?

Yes, IE6/7 compatibility is turned on.

How do you check the number of colours on a HTML background image? It doesn’t show in the inspector like graphic images.

You have to do it when saving or exporting from Photoshop or wherever you created it.

Oh, in that case… yes, they’re millions of colours.

Which version of IE are you seeing this in coz NetRenderer Moved is fine with 7 and 8

If it is only 6 that has a problem then I think that the general consensus of opinion is that 6 is not worth the hassle.

I think that if these pngs were not background images then the IE fix would deal with them. But then again I may be talking nonsense.

Nope, you’re right. The png fix only works with tags; anything
applied as a CSS bg is a deal-breaker.

netrenderer has js disabled so the png fix is rendered useless.

Well, my client says it’s 7, but then again, they’re getting different results on different machines. I’ve tried it in IE on my machine running Parallels, but I’ve no idea which version of IE I’ve got - where do you find out on a PC?

So that would then confirm that 7 & 8 are OK

In the Explorer Help menu>About IE

Ah, yes, I was running 6

I’ve just downloaded and installed 8 and everything looks fine but, just for testing’s sake, I thought I’d try it in 6 again, but it’s gone! Does version 8 automatically replace 6? If so, how do I download 6 and 7 (wherever from I don’t know) to sit alongside 8?

Yes I believe upgrading IE wipes out previous versions.

I think that what you have to do is have 6 and 7 installed in other virtual machines.

Take a look at this, neil:

I used to use something similar to what you’ll find mentioned here,
but did find it caused some spurios printing problems. Hopefully that
will new be resolved.
