I’ve got Photoshop CS2 and am trying, but failing, to make a transparent PNG. I’m just using applying a gradient colour fill to a transparent background.
It all looks good in P’shop, I can see the ‘chequered’ background. But after saving as a PNG the transparency has gone.
I can’t see any ‘retain transparency’ checkbox to tick.
Hi Hugh, I’m using PS4, but I imagine pretty similar. Use the ‘save for web’ option and on the new window that opens somewhere you’ll find png-24 which is what I’ve been using, and this gives the option of transparency.
In CS2 youmay have to go into Imageready to save for web, I can’t remember.
good luck.

There are two flavors of PNG – 8-bit, which has a similar transparency function as GIF, and 24-bit, which has the full smooth transparency feature (8-bit alpha mask, to be geeky). If you pick the former, you will get what you describe; i.e. anything less than 100% transparent will have a color and be 100% opaque at that color. In the Save for Web interface, choose PNG24 from the output options.

Also, don’t forget to either bring it into Freeway as a pass-through, or to manually set the output mode for that image to PNG-Millions in Freeway. It becomes a JPEG by default, otherwise.
