What are the true values for screen measurements? What is the universal measurement to meet the majority population’s screen preferences?
There are PC Platforms, Apple Platforms, large screens, medium-size screens & small screens. We also are dealing with multiple browsers; IE, FireFox & Safari to name a few. Keep in mind that the average user whether apple or pc, can adjust their screen preferences +/-.
What is a satisfying screen size for viewing my content? Text, images, graphics, etc.? Text seems fuzzy and graphics can appear pixelated. They look fine/sharp within freeway’s program.
Speaking of screen adjustments, what is a good setting for text/fonts size so they appear legible when zooming in or out?
Rule of thumb for me is 1000px wide and however tall. I typically use the 960 grid system or at least start there. If I have a page that is a 1000px wide, I get 12px of unused space on each side for people who have 1024x768 screens. If I make the content area smaller by having it be 960px than I have 32px on each side which is a bit better in terms of space.
I think others will agree that 800x600 is out and at least a 1000px wide page is ideal, but again I use 960px so I can accommodate that minimal screen space.
For instance, my website, found in the signature bar, is 1000px wide but the content area is 960px. That might give you a better visual aid.
Yes and if you are happy with that then there is no real need to change but there are definite advantages to basing your layout on the 960 grid system.
Remember that 960 is easily divisible by many factors ie 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 (columns that is)
