Using the Showtime theme

I’ve found that Exhibeo works well with Freeway, but having tried to move a couple of galleries to a simple Xway site, the results are unpredictable when using the ‘Showtime’ theme, particularly if thumbnails are included.

http://www.louthfolkclub.org.uk/guestgallery.html was my starting point. The page displays satisfactorily at full-screen, but reducing the screen size, or viewing on an iPhone results in the captions and navigation arrows becoming detached from the images and the thumbnails partially vanishing behind the bottom box in landscape view, and completely in portrait. This still occurs if I delete the bottom ‘privacy & cookies’ box.

Two other test pages, one with and one without thumbnails, give different results.

The Exhibeo help section is somewhat rudimentary when it comes to setting sizes and spacing, so I’m not sure if it’s actually an Exhibeo problem, or some of my settings in Xway. Any thoughts?

Hi Geoff,

I’ve asked Simon to take a look.

Hi Geoff,

I believe this is a problem in the JavaScript Showtime uses which applies a fixed height in certain circumstances, sometimes erroneously. I suspect that if you select the item in Xway and change the minimum height from 100px to 200px, (larger than the thumbnail height) this problem will probably go away.

Hi Simon. I’ve spent several hours trying alternatives as the minimum height was already set to 200px. The only way I could stop the thumbnails disappearing behind the footer box was to rebuild the elements on a new page and although all the dimensions remained the same, whatever caused the problem vanished.
I applied a maximum height of 600px which kept the elements together on a big screen, though when resizing, the gallery, thumbs and navigation buttons all separate (though not as far apart as when I had no maximum height) so a browser refresh is required to get them back in place.
This particular theme worked far better with Freeway, so I suppose it’s early days for Exhibeo with Xway.
Thanks
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

If you send us a simple Xway document, with a description of the problems you are having, we could take a look at it. (support at softpress dot com)

Jeremy

Actually, I’m looking into it now so don’t worry about sending a document - I’ll get back to you if we need one.

Jeremy

Thanks. Will do.

I haven’t looked at the JavaScript yet, but the simplest way to have this gallery work in the same way in Xway and Freeway is to remove the minimum height. That will cause it to shrink to zero height on the Xway page, but you can get around that by giving it an actual height (e.g. 100px) which somehow gets overridden - this is what happens if I insert the gallery on a Freeway page (the height is automatically set to 100px).

To me, it looks like this is some kind of bug in the gallery code. If you remove the 100px height in Freeway and set a 100px minimum height, the gallery that Freeway exports will behave in the way you say it behaves in Xway. If you remove the 100px minimum height in Xway and set a 100px height, the gallery that Xway exports will behave in same way as a Freeway-exported gallery where you don’t change height and min height. My guess is that the JavaScript is doing something with the minimum height, and removing it in Xway (or not adding it in Freeway) prevents this from happening.

Another comment: if you have content that follows the gallery (further down the page), it’s best not to set an actual height - the problem I’ve found is that the subsequent content may be positioned after the actual height and be covered by the gallery (this happens whether you use Freeway or Xway). It’s annoying that the component shrinks to zero height on Xway’s page, but we will find a way to stop this from happening in a future version of Xway (either by setting a default content height or by figuring out the actual content height).

Thanks for all the suggestions. The problems only occur when thumbnails are included, so I’ll just remove those until Exhibeo is more compatible with Xway.

Geoff

It’s not really an Exhibeo/Xway issue, though. The only difference between having the gallery in Xway as opposed to having it in Freeway is that Xway sets a minimum height and Freeway doesn’t. If you remove the minimum height in Xway, the gallery will behave identically on an Xway or Freeway page. (You can also add an actual height - as Freeway does by default - but this causes problems in both Xway and Freeway if there’s anything further down the page).

This is primarily a Showtime issue: the JavaScript for the Showtime theme is using minimum height in a weird way (the same problems happen if you add a minimum height in Freeway). We’ve logged it as a bug in Showtime - thanks for bringing it to our attention!
