Web windows popping up and strange green icons!

Hi, sitting browsing today, there have been some odd occurrences while using Safari (my default browser). On certain pages I go to there will be a word in a run of copy which is bold, with a small green circle and an arrow poking out of it (a bit like the male/female symbols) to the top right of the word. Click on this and a small pop up ad opens up.

And now MacKeeper pages and gambling pages open up at random, even when clicking in the subject box to write this question.

Any thoughts from anyone how to get rid of the problem? As far as I know nothing new has been downloaded, although my son was on the mac over the weekend.

And even wile I’m writing this, a SkyBet ad and some some random music from somewhere (no other windows open) has started playing.

Thanks in advance
Trev

Just an update - it also happens in Chrome.
And in both browser any link clicked will open a new advertisement page, nothing to do with the link clicked.

That’s great, thanks Ernie.

As I clicked the first link a pop up appeared for a ‘diagnostic’. Luckily enough I had some semblance of sense to realise it wasn’t what I’d clicked on!

Trying it out now in between jobs, so will report back a bit later.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the pointer Ernie. On the first run it seems to have gotten rid of a lot of adware. I’m now running the virus scan and all coming out clear as it stands. There does’t seem to be any sign of the popups that were previously appearing.

Much appreciated.

And just to update - it worked perfectly, so thanks again Ernie.
