Whats the best way to make a photos Gallery?

You should be able to make a custom style using any text processor by editing the existing style.

Or…you could layout a custom page in Freeway, being careful to follow the format from one of the Photoshop style files. (FYI - This would have to be a separate page that is not part of your site so that you can move the published html page to the style directory)

Thanks for that. But I want a graphic. It will allow me to right my name in basic texts, but not in my business logo / identity ect.

Unless you are able to offer some more info that could help me get around the problem. Which would be gratefully received.

Start by reading through the help in Photoshop first regarding creating web gallery templates. Although it is a bit fiddly, and not exactly “simple”, it can be done. Basically you would be creating a new style selection that would show up in Photoshop when producing a web gallery. You could put whatever you want to in the template since you would be customizing it to suit your needs.

Since you are concerned about putting what you already have to better use without extra expenditure, this seems like a reasonable idea, although it will take some time and effort.

Hi John-Paul

That is one hell of a lot of gallery creaters. Are they Mac compatable before I try down loading any? I have started to read a couple and they don’t seem to say much about what I have learn to far in using Freeway.

I have had a look at a couple of them and some you have to add hmtl text in to headers. At which point it goes straight over my head.

Can anyone recommend a good one that will just create a gallery which you can add into a page created in Freeway with out adding stuff in to the HMTL Text?

Chuckamuck

I have read through what little guide there is in CS3 for Web Photo Galleries help and it doesn’t tell me how I cam customise my own template. I do understand how to pick a style from the selection. and add a few words in to it. But beyond that I can’t get beyond that point.

Any more advice?

Jamie, I have used SWF’n Slide Pro for at least 3 years now. It’s
REALLY easy to use and creates flash files (.swf) that you just plop
into Freeway. When I first went to their site to look at it way back
when, I ended up buying several Vertical Moon applications, and they
all work together.

I just opened a new FW test document, dragged this SWF’n Slide
Pro .swf file in that I made for something else and published it. No
action require, just dragged it in.

Just to show you how easy it is.

Jamie - what do you want to achieve with your photo gallery? Do you
want to impress everyone with special effects and transitions or knock
them out with your photos?

I’ve used SWF’n Slide Pro on a number of sites with very pleased
clients. I’ve also ‘rolled my own’ galleries just using FW Pro’s
rollovers and slaves (Target Show/Hide Layer Action), with equal
success. Sometimes, simple is best. It’s how you use the tools you
have got that matters most.

The MooSlideshow was used on this site which I made for my daughter’s business. It was very easy. I’ve used DropWatermark for the watermarks, but don’t have them uniform size as yet. The Slideshow was used on every gallery topic.

Thanks John Paul

For those page of Galleries, I liked the imago, E2, galleria, SmoothGallery 2.0, Mootools1.2, Lightbox2, Art Flash Gallery, Photoflow, FlashGalleryGenerator,

The big problem being that they all seem to need you to get into the realms of Javascripts and CCS Scripts. Which kind of defeats the whole point of using a product like Freeway. I didn’t want to start learning another language. lol

Some of the viewbook galleries look nice. The problem for me is that I want my galleries hosted on the same site as my website to keep thing simple. Otherwise I am paying to have accounts here, there and everywhere. trying to manage multiple accounts just makes life hard work. Not to mention the endless numbers of passwords.

WHERE I AM AT WITH THIS NOW

So it comes back to my original question which, now I have looked through this info I can ask more directly.

QUESTION Re-ASKED MORE PERCISLY:

I want to add a number of photo albums to a website that I am building in Freeway 5 Pro on an Apple Mac G5 running OS X 10.5.5. I am looking for a bit of software that will let me build a photo gallery with thumb nails and display larger images as well a slide show, showing the larger images.

This Gallery needs to incorporated into a Freeway 5 Pro webpage so that I can keep my website theme uniformed though out the whole website. The images/galleries will need to be hosted on the same server as my website.

I want to be able to build this Gallery and drag and drop it or import it on the the webpage without getting into the process of writing or editing Java scripts and CCS Scripts.

The gallery and slide show needs to look professional and with a clean layout.

From the information I have gained so far it would seem that I am limited to two options give that I can’t import the photoshop slideshow on to my webpages and I can’t seem to alter the template it creates.

RULED OUT SO FAR

SOFTWARE: imago, E2, galleria, SmoothGallery 2.0, Mootools1.2, Lightbox2, Art Flash Gallery, Photoflow, FlashGalleryGenerator, monoslideshow

REASON: Because I don’t have an understanding of JavaScript or CCS Scriptwriting

SOFTWARE: Actions forge - Walter’s Carousel action

REASON: It just doesn’t do what I am after from the limited info I can find on it

SOFTWARE: Actions forge - ActionsWorld Gallery

REASON: Almost there, but not quite right

BEST OPTION SO FAR - BUT RULED OUT AT THE MOMENT

SOFTWARE: SlideShowPro

THOUGHTS: Looks Great and just the ticket

REASON: I have to spend over £ 200 to get Adobe Lightroom before getting SlideShow Pro

POSSIBLE OPTONS SO FAR:

SOFTWARE: SWF n Slide from Vertical Moon

REASON: Looks like it might be the one.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Is there any JavaScript or CCS Scriptwriting, because I can’t tell from the limited in on the web

  2. Is it possible to buy a boxed copy from a supplier in the UK, I hate using a credit card on the net (I have had problems 2 out of the three times I have done so)

Any other suggestions?

…I can’t import the photoshop slideshow on to my webpages…

That is correct. Freeway does not edit html, it generates it. You could use an iframe to display an external page in your design, but it won’t look like part of your Freeway page exactly, and doing so is a bit controversial.

This Gallery needs to incorporated into a Freeway 5 Pro webpage so that I can keep my website theme uniformed though out the whole website. The images/galleries will need to be hosted on the same server as my website.

The only way to do this at the moment is using the show/hide actions Freeway comes with. It is not a push-a-button-and-get-an-instant-gallery option either. You will have to take the time to learn how to use them of course.

… and I can’t seem to alter the (Photoshop) template it creates.

You definately can, and the information to do so is in the built-in help menu of Photoshop as I told you. It lists all the special tags needed to build a template. What it doesn’t do is hold your hand and give you a step by step. It might be beyond your understanding at the moment, but it is definately doable.

Thanks for your info

From what you are saying, in part one and to of your reply, Am I going to have problems getting anyone else’s slideshow onto a Frreway page? Because if I am then there is no point in looking at other options

On part three of your reply. I guess that you are talking about the Initial input date you can use at the point of creating your slide show?

Where the guide states this section; http://idisk.mac.com/jamie_jones/Public/Junk/ADWG.jpg

Because I understand that, I mean the page in general.

No SWF n Slide is dead easy to drag and drop onto your page - for the Slideshow.

Is it possible to buy a boxed copy from a supplier in the UK

Have a look at MacWarehouse, Gordon Harwood, Dabs.com to see if they do it.

As far as the incorporating the PShop galleries see the answer to your other question - use the iFrame Action

Nope, that is not what i’m saying. What I am saying is any html page not created in Freeway is basically on it’s own. You cannot effectively bring outside html source into Freeway and expect it to work correctly. Freeway just doesn’t work that way.

If Flash generated files are what your are interested in, they do not generate html therefore they can be used in Freeway similar to the way a graphic file or a Quicktime movie file can be used.

On part three of your reply. I guess that you are talking about the Initial input date you can use at the point of creating your slide show?

No. Do a search in the Photoshop help area on your computer. There is a section specifically about creating custom Web Gallery templates.

Where the guide states this section; http://idisk.mac.com/jamie_jones/Public/Junk/ADWG.jpg

In the top right corner of that screen there are two arrows. Click on the right arrow till you get to the gallery templates info.

IE the banner (Which is an image) on this page: http://www.warwickshire7s.co.uk/aboutus.html

Yes I understand your meaning clearly. You can create a custom web gallery template for Photoshop to use with your own heading, and it will show up in the template choices also.

You can also use SlideShow Pro with the Adobe Flash CS2/CS3 if you have it… you don’t even have to know Flash to set it up.

Once you design your SSP options you export the SWF.

The nicest easiest part of SSP is using SSP Director to add/change/remove photos from your galleries/albums. You do this all online from the GUI that you install on your webserver. You don’t have to make thumbnails or anything if you use SSP Director. It creates the thumbnails, and resizes photos for your use.

Cant see a supplier out of the 3 I mentioned but you can also use PayPal (and Wire Transfer) to buy from Vertical Moon - if not your PP account then use somebody else’s.

Jamie, tell us again why you don’t want want to use the MooTools suite
of actions ($15). Seoras posted this link that shows many examples for
MooTools:

And the actions can be purchased/downloaded here:
http://www.coastalrugs.com/Actions/mootoolssuite.html

It’s not just for slideshows, but also for accordions, some lightbox
stuff, really varied. You said in a previous email that you didn’t
want to have to “learn” it, but that’s the beauty of the action suite
– it makes it very simple to do these things. You don’t have to
“learn” anything. Granted Weaver’s examples could use a little more
polish (sorry, Weaver), but the website shows the potential, and it’s
hard to beat it for $15.

I’m wondering if we’ve tossed so many things at you that it has become
confusing.

Once again I will reiterate that it is MUCH easier to do what you want with a third party option.

Of course, you may wish to go through the hassle of setting these up in FWY yourself in which case all I can say is you have been warned!

Sorry I have not been back on the topic for a couple of days. Work has managed to get in the way.

Thanks for the responses and I will try and do a catch all in one reply:

DELTADAVE:

Thanks for your suggestion but it looks like SWF’n Slide can only be purchased online. I have also sent them an email to see if they have a UK distributer, but again they have not responded.

I will be looking in to the iFrames suggestion as well.

CHUCKAMUCK:

Thanks for your patience on the Photoshop Web Gallery alterations. If I am correct you make the gallery and them use a HTML editing program to re-write the changes you want to make. Which is beyond my abilities. Am I correct in that?

BRIAN:

Thanks for the info, I am still looking at what Lightroom will do for me because that and Slideshowpro would be cheaper than buying Adobe flash.

I have sent the SlideShowPro makers a number of requests by email, but I still have not had a response.

ROBIN:

Re: MooTools, The info I was looking at was a bit all over the show, some of it was in a foreign language, I couldn’t tell a great deal from the info on their website, I got the impression that I would also have to get involved with Java Scripts, which I know nothing about. I also didn’t see anything on their website that in any way impressed me and there was talk about issues.

I might be misjudging the product but I have not seen anything that would make me want to buy it. Sorry if that sound rather blunt, especially if any one here has anything to do with MooTools.

At the moment I am still at a lose as to what to do. When I get a chance I might try and put a call into SoftPress UK and see what they come up with.

No. You can use Freeway to create the template page, but you will have to insert the special tags that Photoshop needs to generate the gallery. It would involve adding the custom tags manually.
