Where to host a blog - for search engines?

Looking around the web its not clear where is the best place to host a blog to get the best out of the search engines for you own site?

What do you think?

  1. On your existing domain ( Domain Blog | Domain, Website, and Ecommerce Tips for Small Businesses )

  2. On a sub-domain ( blog.domain.com )

  3. On an other domain like ( domain.blogspot.com )

Any recommendations?

It isn’t about where the blog is hosted, it is about the content of
that blog. Think of it from an end user’s point of view; they really
don’t (and shouldn’t) care what domain something’s on as long as it
tells them what’s hapening on the world of - well, whatever.

Google thinks in the same way.

There’s a very real reason to host your blog and site on different
domains, and that’s because part of what raises your ranking in
Google (and other search engines) is the number of other domains that
link to yours. But I suspect that having a link from blogspot is
probably not the same, mojo-wise as having a link from Daring
Fireball or DIveIntoMark or another really hot blog. But it might be
something worth trying.

So I’m betting that 3 will show a better return than 1 or 2 in terms
of search engine lift.

However, if part of the reason for making your blog is that you want
to show off your technical acumen to other people who need blogs,
then having it tightly integrated with your own site – say option 2
– would probably be a better choice.

I feel that option 3 is the least preferable, as for a users point of view it could appear as totally divorced from the main site.

There is a lot of talk about this on the web, and no-one seems has come to a confident conclusion.

I’m assuming that option 2 is the best all rounder?

But saying that, plenty of frequently changing material on a blog within the same domain would help also - so perhaps option 1 is best?

Google thinks in the same way.

Although this is true, it’s not the whole picture. Google does take into account any links to your domain from outside your domain when determining how “important” your site is for ranking purposes.

True. As is the fact that the difference one link makes (your site to
your blog) is close to nothing. But every little helps.
