Whole site uploads

When I make a change to my site - only 1 picture - not any styles or
anything that effects any other page, and click upload - the whole
site uploads. Not a major problem, just wondered why?

We would also like to know if there is a way to only upload specific folders or sections such as you can do in Dreamweaver. We are creating a design section to our site that will be comprised of 200 to 300 pages.

Thanks, Team SDA

Same here. My primary site is on the large side. While I could split it off into sub-domains, setting up the redirects would drive me crazy. I would have to create dozens of redirects or risk losing hundreds of external links from other sites. Keeping my visitors happy is important after all.

Loading only what was changed, or being able to specify which folders to load would be great.

When you use Freeway to upload the site, it stores the modification
dates of all of the files it uploads in a special database file called
_siteinfo in the root of your local Site folder. If that file goes
missing or is damaged, that is one reason why the entire site might
upload again.

Another reason could be if your Mac’s internal clock drifts more than
a number (don’t know what the exact limit is here) of seconds from the
international standard. If you haven’t changed your Mac’s default time
server settings, this is pretty hard to imagine happening, but it’s
possible. Maybe if your ISP blocks the Network Time Protocol (NTP)
port for some dumb reason.

Another reason could be if you use External Stylesheets, and you make
some sweeping change to a text style – that will cause all pages that
rely on that style to recalculate their layout to match, and that will
“dirty” all the pages at once, forcing a complete upload.

To answer another question in this thread, the only way to upload one
folder at a time is to “split” your site into multiple Freeway
documents. Each Freeway document manages all of the files needed for
all of the pages in that document as a single unit. Have a search in
the Softpress KnowledgeBase for an article or two explaining how to
split a site.

Walt… my particular problem began after the last Freeway Pro update and relates only to the primary site. It’s possible the siteinfo file is damaged. I’ll try taking care of that first. No blocks on the NTP from Comcast. And I don’t use External Stylesheets.

I have had a constant problem with Internal Stylesheets ever since the update across all sites. For reasons unknown, a master will suddenly lose relationship with the related pages. I’m guessing at this point it’s something to do with the latest Apple system update.

Maybe I’ll just have to wait for the next major system to come out!

Thank you for the input,

I have read through the Freeway documentation and it seems a little clunky of a process. It appears that we need to be setting up the master document with different folders to later delete once a copy document is made. Concerned that links may get broken even with relative pats and such. Would prefer the ability to upload selected files from within the Freeway document.

Is the freeway process not really as convoluted as it seems? Do you have any further advice?

Thanks, Team SDA

I am not sure where you are getting the idea that you have to delete
folders. I use a simple process for producing site

  1. Plan the basic structure and navigation first.

  2. Use the Site Panel to set up any folders desirable to group
    particular sections of the site.

  3. Create the site.

  4. If necessary, use the Site Panel to manipulate or re-order pages
within the site, including moving between folders.

  5. Upload using Freeway’s in-built FTP facility

  6. Use a sepaarte FTP application (Fetch in my case) to upload any
additional files, such as Ioncube, Web Yep Licence, etc, not directly
belonging to the Freeway document, but needed for server side
    interaction.

  7. It’s done and usually working first time (always, as a relative
    amateur, to my amazement).

So unless you have a very large web site, which may need to be
produced in separate parts and “joined” I can’t see too much hassle.
(I’ve seamlessly linked across more than one site on different servers
from within separate Freeway documents, anyway - though I’m not sure
if that’s the best practice).

Also, Freeway is intelligent enough to just upload those pages that
are changed, once your published files reach the server - though where
links on a page are affected by amendments, or PHP is used, you may
get some apparently ‘clean’ ones also re-uploaded.

Hope that helps. The technical wizards will most likely tell you more,
if you need further info.

You can use the splitting technique at any time, and it’s not that
hard to make it happen. I have done it organically (letting the site
grow and grow until the hardware can’t keep up) and I have planned
ahead. Both ways work fine.

It’s a one-time dance you go through to sever the internal links and
replace them with static (external) links. Once you do that, it’s
nothing you ever have to worry about at all.

Thank You WaltD,

We will give this a try. May have some questions later.

Colin thank you for your detailed input. Yes our site is going to have a section that contains a few hundred pages. Our issue is with uploading and the Freeway document splitting technique, we have never done this before.

Thanks All, Team SDA

Can anyone tell me how to upload a site created with Freeway to my Comcast account. That is, what do I put into the fields in the Upload dialog (in the File menu)? Specifically, for Server, Directory, and Web Address.

I found this on thier web site…

To upload files from your computer to Online Storage, using FTP
software, enter the following FTP Server Settings:

SERVER: upload.comcast.net
USER NAME: Comcast.net user name
PASSWORD: Comcast.net password

Retrieve Files From Online Storage

To access your files, type the following URL into your browser’s
location field, substituting your Comcast.net user name, your folder
name and your file name:
https://home.comcast.net/~yourusername/ yourfolder/yourfilename
Sign in with your user name and password to view your files.

Leaving the “Directory” field blank, it seemed to start uploading,
but then I got “Server not responding”.
But this is the closest I’ve come to getting it to work.

Thanks very much for the suggestions!

David,

All the fields worked, thanks. Putting a slash “/” for the Directory
finally got everything uploaded. Many thanks again for the rapid,
helpful replies!

So they aren’t actually a hosting company? And you don’t have a domain name.

Server space is cheap as is domain registration and there are a few of the guys here that offer hosting at v reasonable prices.

Thanks, I might be interested in looking into that soon. For now, the
1 GB is enough, and I pay Comcast enough that I want to use the space
I have.
