Why Have a CSS Style Sheet?

Can anyone explain very briefly what CSS style sheets are for?

I’ve set my site up without them (I think). I’m not really sure why they’re necessary.

(Side note: I am creating some separate pages on my site for mobile smart phones using the iPhone re-direct action. Would setting up those pages with the CSS style sheets be a good idea?)

Thanks.

They define the appearance and position of the elements/content of a
web page. You already use CSS it’s just that the styles (CSS) can
either be in a separate file or included with the web page somewhere.
