I looked at those when I lived in a big house in California. The upshot was
whatever the source transmitter (built into the cablebox provided by the
telecomm) had to also be compatible with the repeater. This was hard for me
than I thought.
In the end, I simply elevated the transmitter above the level of any user
devices in the house (I know, sounds absolutely un-scientific) which gave
me full house wifi access.
Better luck for you,
–

I’m using a Devolo plug in the electric mains as a wireless extender and very pleased with it. (with the router wired into a base plug next to it)

Location can be critical. Normally reception is not an issue with a MBP, “i” device or a big Sony tv, but recently picked up a small Samsung SmartTV for a bedroom and the built-in Wi-Fi seems unusually sensitive (apparently this is a fairly common Samsung problem). Airport Extreme is in the attic near an exterior wall so I’m limited to placement options (though I may put it on the floor as far from the wall as I can get).

If you have Airport Extreme, can’t you extend that with an Airport Express?
Check that out…

I used to mount my Airport Extreme inside a metal network panel. The reception was awful. After I moved the AE outside of the panel my reception nearly doubled.
BTW, an Airport Express will extend the range of an Airport Extreme: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Hi Todd,
I had an old D-Link 615 wireless router (D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N Router review: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N Router - CNET) gathering dust so after we moved house and needed to boost the Wi-Fi signal I flashed it with the open source DD-WRT firmware (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index). This opened up a whole load of features that were in the most part completely beyond me but one of these was the ability to set the router up as a repeater which seems to work well and extends the wireless range well beyond the limits of the house and garden. Having the network ports on the back of the 615 also means that I can also plug in non-wireless devices (like NAS drives) into the router.
I was going to buy a dedicated repeater or power line converter but thought I’d try flashing the 615 and glad I did if only to see if I could do it. After all if I’d managed to brick it I wouldn’t really have lost much other than my time.
Regards,
Tim.

That’s quite interesting, Tim, but I don’t see any love for an Airport Extreme.

The Airport Extreme can already do the wireless extension trick without flashed firmware.

Hi Todd,
As Walter mentioned the Airport Extreme should already allow you to act as an extender. I mentioned flashing an old router as, if you are anything like me, you may have a few of these budget routers kicking around that, once flashed, can be brought to life as repeaters or a wireless/wired bridge.
Regards,
Tim.

Ah. I’m fairly new to the Wi-Fi game so I haven’t had time to build a collection of unused routers.
Thanks,
Todd
