WordPress for site development

I think I understand why so many small businesses are moving towards companies that build website for them in WordPress. I stumbled upon this site built in WordPress and wow. Take a look at this.

I dont think that this is really down to the fact that it is a WP site.

It is really a case of clever use of a bucketload of JQuery scripts.

Turn off javascript and you have nothing.

Still, if templates like these are free for WordPress users, I can see why people I know who have never built a website before are suddenly coming out of the woodwork announcing that they develop websites using WordPress exclusively.

Hi & good day,

This was done not because of Wordpress or templates but in spite of it.
It can be done with Freeway, I’m sure, but then with the appropriate scripts.
Beautiful webpages are most of all the result of the high art of design, not of which technique had been used.

I have found working in Wordpress myself has had major advantanges to clients.
A) It already has CMS features like news/blog;
B) Most clients are used to seeing and using the admin area; C) You can buy ready made templates that are really amazing, enabling you to just reskin and alter CSS to suit.

I love Freeway, and it’s a totally different piece of software, but I’m designing more sites that are CMS based and Wordpress is the most accomodating.

I find I’m using Freeway less and less, and even moving on to looking at alternative software for basic sites. (mainly because i need to hand over the files to agencies who require the code to be a bit more ‘regular’. (i.e. not inline styles or externalized css sheets for each page).

I’m waiting for Freeway 6, which i hope will have moved on to adhere to some more regular output of code. Please Softpress guys, how’s it coming on? I fear it’s still ages away…

Of course, Freeway is still my program of choice, it just feels like competitors are advancing faster…

I see. So for clients that wants to to a lot of blogging and content uploads, WordPress should be the way to go. For clients who want a brochure type design and perhaps a few updates at a time, like videos, new documents or changes in copy, that would be Freeway. So that sounds like the way to decide which application to use.

I don’t think it’s quite that cut-and-dry. There are all sorts of CMS options and WP is just one, albeit very popular, option. The same goes for FW. I think it’s beneficial to consider multiple tools based on the project/client and how you like to work. But that’s just my opinion.

I think people mostly like the price tag of WP versus it being “the one all do all” CMS.

I figure that anything WP can do, I can do better in ExpressionEngine. Plus I can build my templates in FW so I don’t need to buy a WP template and hope it works out when I can just go ahead and create a custom design of my own without spending hours looking around for something I could convert.

Interesting Dan. A bit off topic, but as you mentioned it, Any more EE screen casts on the way?

I’ve been super busy lately and haven’t had much time for anything. I’d love to do some new screencasts on EE, which on the list of “to-do’s” is next up.

Kind of a mixed bag on requests for EE though. People want to build an entire site again, like in the WebYep series, and then those who just want to know how the actions work. Not sure the direction yet, but we shall see.

Does anyone have a simple site that they wouldn’t mind being converted into EE for some screencasts?
