Align problem in OS devices

I am working on a 960 grid page and included a background and other elements that are bigger than the width. The page align is set to centered and width set to maximum. I don’t have any problems in any browser but when I open it on any OS devices, iPhone, iPad or even Android tablets, the page appears align to left. Why is that? What am I doing wrong?

Please help

thanks
Marcus

Unfortunately not possible if you use “absolute” positioned items.

I don’t have any problems in any browser …

The honest truth? You got - in all browsers. The problem is called side-scroll (and this is exactly your positioning-problem on the iDev)

Please help

Switch construction method to the “relative” one which is also known as Box-in-Box-Model. If you want to do client-projects with all its different wishes successfully, it should become anyway an indispensable part of your daily work.

Thomas

Hello Thomas.

Thanks a lot for taking your time to help me.
My problem is that my expertise in web design isn’t good enough to work properly with Inline_Box_Model. I have done some basic stuff using Inline_Box_Model but not a whole website yet. Back in 2010 I bought a screencast from Dan Jasker and learned a little about it. This is one of the things I really want to learn but because of my short time available I’ve been postponing it for some time. I know you also have many screencasts available on this subject and they seen very good, Thomas.

One question: The Relative Page Layout Action on Freeway would help me to fix that even working CSS layouts (absolute layers)?

best regards,

Marcus

Yes, with the relative page layout action, your site can be centered, like you expect.

That’s great! I will give it a try and post my results later.
Thank you very much, Thomas.

I tend to say:

No. I even would say absolutely no.

It is a matter of construction - and RPL can’t rescue this situation.

You can have a background color or picture which fills the entire background and a 960px wide content which is centered. Use the RPL action combined with the ‘make item into page footer’ (in case you use a footer) and it works perfectly. But maybe Thomas knows something about your whishes? I think you mean a website like I pictured above. This is absolutely possible. I did it with: http://www.ocoldenzaal.nl

Thank you, Thomas. At first I thought you said that the Relative Page Layout Action would help me specifically in this case, and then you said it wouldn’t. I suppose its a matter of both, construction and the use of the action, right?

Hello Wimdg. This is the page I am working on:
http://www.plusartgraphics.com/test/osb4/

The image of the blue wave is a frame for the slideshow. This is the only file that really is wider than the 960. Its a layered png file I pasted over the slideshow. I think this this is the problem

by the way, nice website you did
Thanks,

Marcus

you simply have to double-check who said what.

I never used RPL and I never will.

The point is, that there are “exceeding” or overlapping items on that page. If RPL does what I suppose, those overlapping items will be re-placed (relative) INTO the pageDIV and therefor mis-placed.

But honestly - it’s just a guess, so simply give it a try.

If you start with a blank canvas and a masterpage with the PNG with the blue waves as background, you can then build the rest of your site with the alignment being centered. Keep the css items on a grid and apply the RPL action to the site.
This should do it. There is also an action for the background picture to keep it full background. It is available in actionsforge.

Is this what you mean?

Sorry, Thomas…
You’re right. Wimdg said it. I suppose I didn’t sleep enough last night. I use to work sometimes really late.
but definitely, I will give it a try and will also take a look at your screencasts later. This is something I do want to learn.

best regards both of you,

Marcus

Thomas is right, items cannot overlap, but a grid works fine. I now use the inline method for my own site (blog), and it is like Thomas stated a much more solid building method. I like inline. I even made my site responsive with the kind help of Caleb and Ernie!

But.… as I said the RPL works nicely as long as you want a site like I assume you want.

Thanks Wimdg. Yes. This is the way I built it: Using FW 6 the wood background was applied as a window background and set to tile horizontally and vertically. Then I pasted the blue wave png as a layer over it. I will try to buid it the way you you say.

Thank you,

Marcus

…same problem as yesterday with the other page, right?

The dimensions 1633 × 843 I did was because I wanted the slideshow which have 960 x 484 to fit inside the waves. In my poor knowledge I assumed that overlapping would be right… I will follow the instructions that Thomas and Wimdg gave me to try to correct this.

Do you have any other additional recommendation, David?

I appreciated

Hi Thomas, I have a question:

I’m considering to subscribe to your screencasts to learn the inline-box model. I have just watched the The Freeway Box-in-Box ModelPro Version6 - Chapter1 and it looks pretty interesting, but I was taking a look at your site and realized that under “paid screencasts” there’s a gap between #012 BoxModel Contest Part 5 video and #018 BoxModel Contest Part11. I may be looking at the wrong page of your site, but can’t find part 6 to 10. Under what section I should find them?

please let me know
Thanks again,

Marcus
