[Express] Page link & Rollover

  1. Successfully created the roll over button like in the tutorals. It was imported into new pages that were added. However I may have missed a step page that is OPEN on the screen button is not a different color indicating which page is selected. (the colors change upon clicking on them, but I expect to have 22 pages and the user to know by a color or shading change WHICH page he/she is on at the time.
    What did I miss.

Have read and re-read and watched and re-watched all the tutorials. HELP! 3 Days working o n this is frustrating.

Added to the post: There are missing graphics as indicated by the edit resources window. They are 3 button.png while the 3 buttonover. png files are found. HOW do or What do I do to
cause them to nOT be ‘missing’??

There are missing graphics as indicated by the edit resources window.

Did you move/delete the original files after you imported these graphics into FW?

If so then FW will use its cached version to give you output but it will not be as good quality as if it was using the original files.

Which tutorial are you following for this?

The ‘active’ state is the one that shows which page you are on - not sure if you can have an active state in Express or whether the Tutorial covers this.

downloaded 1- 6 tutorials and have studied them and compared what I did exactly to what I saw on the images in the tutorials. Downloaded all references available and printed and read those as well.

No not moved any original files, but there is no specific location for them. I could have taken the graphics in by drop/drag or imported from one of several locations from desktop to some file (as this is all experimental learning
and it’s 16 days of learning the trial version.

Have set up two different versions; one using the buttons created exactly like the tutorial. Usability report on both pages: “Links on Map Areas must be repeated on text item: 1a”
Since I have no idea what a Map Area is, i’ve not been able to solve that one. File title is newbuttonSite.freeway. Whether it’s related to the link problem I don’t know

The other file (site) is ImagesNewFW site.freeway. and therein the buttons were created like in the first/second tutorials for ONE page, but I did expanded it to 3 pages and work without rollover. I’ve not figured out how add rollover. the Usability report for the 3 pages shows;
(1) Link Phrases; (2) Link Phrases and Multiple spaces in HTML Test Item 2a; (3) Link Phrases.
What are link phrases? The multiple spaces may just be text spacing I’ve utilized ???

MORE… on rechecking images were originally on the desktop and later moved into the working folder. If they are put in the media folder for that site is that the best place?
If not how then to help FW find them?They are now in a Freeway folder with all other Freeway materials.

Freeway maintains a (Mac OS) Alias to each element you use in any document. As long as you don’t move it from your local drive to a remote server (which really makes a copy) it is very difficult to confuse Freeway by moving things around on your Mac. If you do manage this feat, you will be prompted to locate the first image/file/whatever, and if there are other missing files in the same folder, all will be found in one whack. There is no special need to put it in the Media folder – it’s just a folder – but that’s a good way to keep things organized for you.

how then to help FW find them?

From the Main Menu: Edit>Resources

In the window that opens select the name of the missing graphic.

Click the Edit button (bottom right)

In the new window that opens you have several options Resample, Update and Locate. Use the Locate button and then navigate with the Finder to where your missing file is stored (the Media folder?)

Select the missing file and then click the Open button (bottom right) - and if there are other missing files in the same folder than FW should ‘locate’ them too.

In FW multiple spaces ie space, space, space, space is reduced in the HTML output to one space. This is how the web works.

If you want to add several spaces in a row you have to utilise a non-breaking space which can be added using Option+Space like here.

thanks Delta Dave… here’s progress following your latest:
On the ImagesNewFW Site.Freeway which had multiple spaces and link phrases in the usability report. Was unable to find the spaces WORKING in the text box; but when the text was copied and pasted into TextEdit the hidden spacing was obvious; hence backspaced to correct; then pasted back into the text box and Usability Report showed it eliminated.
But as to “link phrases” (no other wording in the UReport) I checked the Edit resources window and all is okay.
Question #1 So what does LINK PHRASES signify or mean???

On the other version newbuttonSite.freeway (buttons created same as in the three part button tutorial) what does “Links on Maps Areas” mean? Or where are Map areas? or what are they?
YOUR help is really appreciated. Your web page is really easy to read…neat.

Links on Maps Areas

FW creates a Map Area generally when you apply a link to an item that is not rectangular in shape. So if you create a rectangle and then rotate it at an angle not a multiple of 90deg and then apply a Link FW draws a Map Area which is the actual co-ordinates of the link on your FW page.

I am not sure if FW does the same thing when you add a link to graphic text but you could apply the link to the container rather than the text.

The Usability report is a useful tool but should be treated with some care - much in the same way that you would use W3C validation. Errors may be thrown up that are far less significant than others.

Personally I don’t use it much but that is not to mean that it shouldn’t be used! And I certainly wouldn’t be using it in the early stages of site construction until I had worked out the design/layout etc. And as a new user of FW you shouldn’t give it that much thought until you are more in tune with how FW all works.

That my 2c on the Usability tool.

Thanks, Dave.
Question. See web site at http://home.comcast.net/~caman89/site/?/home/

That’s a site I created using Comcast’s software but it has page layout limits I choose to go beyond, hence moving to
Freeway. [There are other web sites I constructed through homestead.com later acquired by Intuit… they are up and running, but neither of those allow the flexiblity of FW.]

On the above link, whatever page the viewer has open… in the grey button bar of the 21 pages at the top, the one open is a darker gray… WHAT IS THE PROCESS BY WHICH THAT IS ACHIEVED? IT SEEMS MORE OR DIFFERENT THAN ROLL OVER… IS IT? OR??

Below is the code for the Home link on that page

<li class="active"><a href="?/home/&amp;PHPSESSID=ae642713a3da15e54073531d4b099582"><b>Home</b></a></li>

Note the Class of ‘active’ - this means that whichever link has the ‘active’ class applied will be Bold.

In my first reply in this post I did mention the ‘active’ state and how that can be used to change the styling of a link.

What I do not know is whether FW Express allows you to apply styling beyond the standard options.

Certainly you could probably add the code using Page>HTML Markup in the before <end/Head> section.

Try this snippet in there

<style type="text/css">
<!--
a:active {
font-weight: bold;
color: #000;
}
-->
</style>

This should make the active link Bold and Black. Adjust to suit your needs.

Using FW Pro this can be done (without adding extra code) in the Link styling section of the Inspector but I do not know if Express has these options.

And just to clarify the meaning of Link Phrases

A Link Phrase is the text on your page that has the Link applied to it. In the above example the Link Phrase is ‘Home’ - and the Accessibility report is asking you to check that the Link Phrase has meaningful content if it was read by an assistive device like a Screenreader.

So Home does have meaning but if you created a link like:

‘Click here to go to the Home page’ and the link was applied to the word ‘here’ it would have no real meaning.

Thanks, D… it’s a big help. I’ll study that.
I’ve created 22 pages and linked them and inserted some html and graphics is a few. They show up in the browsers Safari and Firefox…

Is there a place where it is possible to TEMPORARILY make a FTP upload to TEST it, then remove it? If I do that at Comcast, it overwrites everything and don’t want to do that until FW setup is proven to be okay.

DISREGARD the request for a ftp upload site…
Able to do it on comcast independent from and without interfering with the other one created by their sofware (which is at a different URL)
One created with FW express: http://home.comcast.net/~ann8626/index.html
with most pages blank and missing stuff on the awareness page; but great to see same results as in FWPreview, etc.
THANKS FOR THE HELP

It has occurred to me that the CSS menu action is part of Express.

If so then that would be the easiest way for you to create your navigation including the active states.

The action interface gives you all the options you will need.

After applying the recommended code from the 8th msg
the page name changes to black only on licking page title but it is Not black when the page opens. I typed:

+++++++++ this is my separator here, it was Not used on the insert: there is no "end head section in Express only Before </head and After </head
same result with either.

Also read CSS data in guide, watched tutorial twice but thr tutorial does not cover this aspect

Also, what do i type to remove that inserted text ??

This sentence in your last post I do not understand:
{Can you post a link to a page online that has it added - it should be in before } … don’t understand.

on “remove”
To clarify:
(remove) How does one remove (delete) the snippet (8 line code text) suggested in yours of Jan 8th (in the green image)???

That exactly copied CODE TEXT did not achieve the desired result as I explained and gave a reference to see the actual result on line.

Instead it altered Browser response so that clicking a page title causes that page title to elongate to black - prior it did NOT elongate & was a different color. So want to eliminate the added code. (I had not saved a separate copy of prior work before adding your code.)

Unless there is a way to alter it, I want to remove it and get back to what it was before; then work on a copy, but do not know how to access that snippet and delete it. Can you please explain. There seems no “unmarkup” in Express.
