Font help

I can’t seem to get Source sans pro light - to work? See the Times roman font below 4 call outs…

What does seem odd is the typefaces in my Mac (and when I call up the font in the styles pallete) are separate - i.e. source sans pro - regular and bold. Then another set source sans pro - light and extra light and so on?

Any pointers! Cheers

Have you checked the font with something like FontDoctor?

Nope - what does this do and where how do I do this?

FontDoctor scans your font folders for corrupt fonts. I use it anytime I have a font issue and it usually finds, and in some cases fixes the font. I believe it’s free with some font management programs, such as Suitcase Fusion (my preferred font manager) and FontExplorer X. Please note that if you use a third party font manager you will have to stop using FontBook.

Here’s a link for more info:

Yes, it’s free with Suitcase Fusion:

This may be because you have the same font from different sources or different foundries (i.e. Postrcipt, TrueType, OpenType or Adobe, Linotype, Bitstream, etc.)

Could be. I may have misunderstood you. Are you using online fonts?

Yes from Google fonts - I downloaded the fonts from there just use locally but I added the code in the head from Google fonts

Did you quit Freeway after enabling the font in your preferred font library management tool? Remember, Freeway cannot rebuild its font cache on the fly, you have to stop and start Freeway to catch up to any changes made to the system font list.

I’m afraid I’m not as experienced with online fonts Justin. Sorry.

Walter, can font managers be used to manage web fonts? I noticed in one of the FWP files I got from Ernie that in the Edit Font Sets menu within FWP there are several fonts with either the “WEBFONT” or “Websafe” descriptor.

Is that something Ernie is adding or is it part of the font name?My background is print, so I’m really not familiar with how web fonts are used and managed? Any help is appreciated.

Sorry to steal your thread Justin. I’ll post these questions elsewhere if you’d like.

There is a technique where you download and install a Web font on your Mac, use it as the screen font for itself in Freeway, and then use the traditional Web font link to add that font back into your HTML pages. It makes for a very WYSIWYG experience. I haven’t tried it myself, but there are many here who have. Hopefully one or another of them will pipe up with the recipe.

Out of curiosity I was able to get it to work using the Web Inspector by adjusting the @font-face/font-family naming scheme. Not sure if the problem is related to how FW handles this stuff, though.

You also have multiple instances of the body tag spread across a couple stylesheets.

Looks like your font set is incorrect. It should be:

“Source Sans Pro”, sans serif

And if you want the light variant then use this as the font set (an alternative to manually entering the weight into each style you want to use that particular variant):

“Source Sans Pro”, sans serif; font-weight: 300
