I’ve just opened my freeway file in Xway and I am now trying to reattach all my resources as they are showing as missing. I can do this successfully one by one - please can someone tell me how can I reattach them all in one go please? (otherwise it will take me until Christmas!)
When you locate a resource, click on the Locate button without selecting the individual resource. This allows Xway to locate other resources that are in the same folder.
How this works: by selecting a folder instead of an individual file, you are giving Xway permission to access any file that is in that folder.
Hi Jeremy, thank you for your help. When I try to do this and try to add the whole folder the locate button is greyed out, prompting me to select the individual file? Am I trying to do this from the wrong window? I am on the top menu bar>View>Resources
If the resources are in their original location (i.e. the location at which they were accessed in the Freeway document) they should be reported as Inaccessible rather than Missing, and Xway will automatically display the correct folder, so the only thing you need to do is to choose Locate in the locate panel.
If the resources are not in their original location, they will be reported as Missing, and you will have to navigate to the folder where they are found (in the locate panel). The Locate button should be enabled if you navigate to a folder that contains a resource with the correct name.
Note that if a resource is not in its original location, Xway will display a path to its original location in the Path field at the bottom of the Resources view. That may help you figure out where you should be looking.
If a resource has been moved and renamed, you will need to choose it individually.
Thanks Jeremy, this is the issue I think as I am on my new iMac rather than my old one which Freeway works on. I have the same folder but as it’s a different iMac the path is different… I have the same overall graphics folder on my new iMac however the locate window is only allowing me to attach the file if I go all the way to the individual image? it’s not enabling me to select my main Website Graphics folder where all the images are with the correct names - which Freeway was using.
If the resources have the exact same names, but the path is different, you should be able to navigate to the folder where they now are, and Xway will enable the Locate button, allowing you to choose the folder which contains the resources.
An alternative approach would be to run Xway on your old Mac (temporarily), where Freeway is, and import the document there. Xway can run on any version of macOS from 10.14 on (Freeway also runs in 10.14).
The Xway User Guide contains a detailed appendix on importing Freeway documents, with several pages of advice on graphics that might be helpful. There are some additional complications if you used non-pass-through graphics in your original Freeway document.
Hi Jeremy, Yes they have exactly the same names and are in the same folder (I’ve just copied it to my new iMac) and they are all pass through graphics yet it is not allowing me to select the whole graphics folder only the individual file?
My old iMac is running 10.10.5 and I am trying to move over everything to my new iMac hence my purchase of Xway.
I’m puzzled. I don’t have any problems locating resources in Sequoia, and I’ve checked with a colleague who is running Tahoe, and they don’t have any problems either.
When you change directory in the locate panel, Xway checks to see if the resource you are locating exists in that directory. If there is a file with the exact same name, it enables the Locate button.
If that’s not happening, could there be a subtle difference in file names? You can check the original file name of a resource by selecting it in the Resources view and looking at the Path field near the bottom of the view.
I’ve just noticed that the filenames FW has stored in the actual file I have opened in Xway have hypens where the gaps in the file names are - these have been added by freeway and are not on my original files. Is this the issue, presumable Xway is looking of the file name with hyphens which freeway has added to the spaces?
Xway replaces spaces with hyphens (and collapses multiple spaces into a single hyphen), but it also remembers the original file name (with spaces), so this shouldn’t normally cause any problems.
Still, what happens if you try locating a resource whose file name doesn’t contain spaces? Does the Locate button get enabled in the locate panel when you navigate to the folder that contains this resource?
I have some file names that are exactly as they appear in my local graphics folder and it picks up the group when I navigate to the very last folder they are in (inside the outer folders) - rather than when I just select the outer ‘website graphics’ whole folder (hope this makes sense!).
That does make sense. You have to navigate to the folder that contains the resource. Xway doesn’t check subfolders in this situation.
However, if there are missing resources in subfolders, locating a resource in one of the outer folders may also succeed in locating resources in a subfolder. (This is because in granting access to a folder, you are also giving Xway access to subfolders within that folder, according to Apple’s sandboxing rules.)
Thanks, I guess I am going to have to manually reattach all the files where Freeway has added hyphens as Xway is not picking them up, they are the same files as used in FW with no changes apart from the hyphens FW added.
I wonder if the resources that contain hyphens are resources that Freeway has published rather than original resources. Xway sometimes references published resources rather than original resources in imported Freeway documents, although this doesn’t normally happen with pass-through resources.
You can check by looking at the Path field in the Resources view.
It’s showing the path as from my hard drive - this is the start for you to see then it goes to the folder> etc.. where the original images are. It’s the same for all the missing ones.
The weird thing is when I look in the site folder>resources (where I published the site in FW) all the files are in there without any hyphens? Yet the freeway document I have opened in Xway is showing all the resources with hyphenated file names? Yet the original files on my hard drive don’t have hyphens?
