future of intaglio

Dear „Small software company“,
i love and use your software INTAGLIO for many years.
It works good with Catalina.
Your latest update 3.9.5 is from 2017.
Should I be worried?
I am shure most users will accept a paid upddate.

Best regards
Stefan Sommer

Ditto. One guesses that Intaglio sales don’t justify improvements.

Point 1: I won’t call a software dead when it still works. Why should it be updated when it works and there aren’t any problems?

Point 2: The while issue of software slowly dying - which I hope is not the case here - is a distubing one. I have seen several good products going away with no messages at all from the producer.

The most disgraceful I have seen was VectorDesigner, where the producer silently wiped the web from all that could be wiped to pretend that it never existed, instead of uploading the last update with a clear message of it being discontinued.

A later example is Karelia, which seems to have gone totally silent. In that case, the website is still there but no news from the company in a long time.

This kind of behavior is very bad for the small-scale software business. If we can’t trust the small developers, then we must select between the big producers and open source software.

If Intaglio would - and again I don’t say it does - go away, then my next bets are Libre Office and Inkscape. Neither are as nice, intuitive and polished as Intaglio, but they are my backup plan. (I have a few others but they can’t compare to Intaglio.)

But as long as it works, I will keep using Intaglio!

Continued development would be nice. See below; not going to happen.

I’ve had other developers disappear. One sold the software for years after he quit supporting it. Like Intaglio it was well enough written that it continued to work for years.

But I wouldn’t dump on all independent developers because some fail or retire or abandon.

The biggees regularly give on on software. One that I didn’t like was Apple abandoning Aperture. And they did it just like Intaglio; years of no upgrade and finally announced that it was over. Open source efforts fade too.

I looked at QCAD but for the amount I use Intaglio I’ll stick with Intaglio. QCAD would be a learning curve.

Looks like Intaglio is Purgatory’s only macOS software. And their website has two iOS programs shown that are not longer available. Nick Nallick, email@hidden • 970-259-7129 Software Engineer, Asynchrony Labs is listed as the seller for the macOS program and in 2016 he apparently was working for them.

But I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth; no complaints there. I just don’t want to learn another program. And there isn’t much in this area. I want the rulers and sizing (being able to type the numbers) features among others; most in this space are graphic design and lack these CAD features. The CAD programs are too powerful.

Regarding SALES: I’ve brought this up before, but I’m going to ask it again.

=== 1. YOUTUBE: ===

I can’t find ANY mention of Intaglio on Youtube.
How many Mac users might be interested in purchasing Intaglio — IF they knew it existed.

=== PROPOSAL 1: ===

Someone make some kind of video introducing Intaglio.

  • I was thinking of trying to make a “half-assed” video about it myself.
  • I just haven’t been able to “block out the time” to make it yet.

An Example of Not Knowing:
I was talking to a person I met at a model railroad meeting, and he told me he was using TurboCad or something like that, and how horrible it was.
People like this might be potential purchasers for Intaglio.

=== 2. NAME TWEAK: ===

If you search for “Intaglio” on either Google or Youtube, you find all this stuff about making Italian artwork – which is apparently where the name “Intaglio” came from — which has NOTHING to do with the Mac drawing program.

=== PROPOSAL 2: ===

If the owners would slightly “tweak" the name to something like “MacTaglio” or MacIntaglio” or “iIntaglio” or something UNIQUE, it would be a lot EASIER to SEARCH for it.

QUESTION: Does anyone have any OPINIONS, on either of these “Proposals” ??

I know a person, Mac user, who is currently in an education on “technology information” or whatever it would be called in english. Maybe we can make a professional video, granted that what they teach is useful?

YES to both proposals! I’d purchase a new MacIntag! I use it to make
my yard landscaping layouts, floor plans for furniture placement, and
fabric length requirements for my sewing projects.

I must say that “I use MacIntaglio on a Macintosh” sounds either so right or so confusing. :slight_smile:

Just wrote a very long post which disappeared as I was researching my response. Summary: there is competition but it’s hard to discern which one to pick. Will stick with Intaglio for now.

A YouTube video that brings business to Nick might help him to continue to support the app.

I have had good luck using Affinity Designer ($$) with files that caused errors with Intaglio. Affinity Designer is a great tool from a company that makes great tools, but despite Affinity’s more “modern” and trendy interface, I find Intaglio a little easier to use, and I still prefer it. But Intaglio does seem to get less stable with every macOS update.

Intaglio saved me time and money editing .ai and .eps files without needing to donate a kidney to Adobe and unleash their invasive background and startup daemons into my system. Whatever the future is, I am so glad I discovered it, and I appreciate the effort and the value of it over the years.

I hope it moves forward, and I’ll always support it. I’ll use it fails to launch.

I once had high hopes for AD because they promised support for Freehand documents. But after a while it turned out that this only applies to the PDF stream. What? Did they ever wonder what “PDF” stands for?
And with the last update (1.8/1.8.1) they broke all boolean-related tools. No way to downgrade if you are an App/le Store customer. I´m almost done with this company. ;-/
For quick editing images (annotations, cropping etc) nothing beats Intaglio for me.
For more specialised SVG applications and output I rely on Inkscape since 2005.
Just my 2¢ of course.

Cheers

I think you just nailed one of the things I dislike with AppStore. I feel that I can’t trust AppStore applications. I have a few that I bought that way but I find myself avoiding them.

I switched to Eazydraw due to the uncertainty of Intaglio. Also, Eazydraw allows saving in different formats for lawyers, their use, and retransmission.

I have EazyDraw, but prefer Intaglio for a number of reasons.

  • EazyDraw does not have as good user interface. I find it harder to find features.
  • EazyDraw comes in a confusing number of different versions.
  • EazyDraw is bought on AppStore only (I think).

The positive side is that it has better SVG import than Intaglio had last I tried.

My confusion is the same - non-functioning Intaglio. . I did find an Intaglio app in the App Store. At a cost of ~ $50, I downloaded it. Now Intaglio is working fine. I had expressed to Intaglio years ago that as a business man myself, I thought that my original payment YEARS ago was not sufficient to expect a continuing support of the application. I do hope that all is well for the creators and that they are reaping the monetary rewards.

So - if Intaglio has gone - and no updates beyond High Sierra - what is the alternative?

Graphic is good except it’s tricky with children setting-up a several-page document (as in ‘Drawing Size’ in Intag)

Or doing it the Blender way: Collect donations to buy it free as open source. Worked wonderfully with Blender.

payed a long time ago the fee. Use it beside a lot of other drawing programs. But the main reason for buying was: it opens all my old design’s from the sys6 to sys9 time of old programs (macdraw, clarisdraw, etc).

And untill now this is one of the best editors for svg’s.

For that and the opening old-files i will pay an upgrade price if necessary. So someone has to accept the challenge.
