I’m still using an OS9 application (ImageStyler) for web graphics. Every time I try and open it in Classic under Tiger (10.4.11) two things happen:
as Classic (OS9) is starting up a message pops up saying files in the System Folder need to be updated…though this seems to go ahead fine. But it asks it EVERY time I try and open this programme.
As soon as ImageStyler itself is opened a system message pops up saying “Connection Failed - the server may not exist or is not operational at this time. check the server name or IP address and try again”…what?? what’s that about?
As soon as I make any operational movement in ImageStyler this message pops up again and takes 3 or 4 mouse click to close - but then it immediately pops up again at the next Image Styler instruction (just clicking on something).

Check ImageStyler prefs; it sounds as though you (purposely or not)
have it set to upload something to a server. You should be able to
find where to turn it off. It could also be something as simple as
having ‘automatically check for updates’ chosen in prefs.
Seems to have been cured by re-installing the programme.
Nevertheless, I’m curious about the server thing…there are no settings in ImageStyler for uploading anywhere. I reckon it’s some mysterious internal OSX thing - maybe the programme is looking for some component somewhere?
We have found a newer version of this software: click here to update now. We are sorry, the software you are looking for was discontinued in january 2000. Click here to buy our newest $5000 creative suite web premium package online.
No, it doesn’t look like an Adobe software search/update thing, looks much more ‘internal’. I reckon it was OSX throwing a wobbly about something that was missing or it ‘thought’ was missing. The programme opened no problem but every time you hit a key or clicked on something to work, the damn message popped up and kept coming back repeatedly.
Anyway, re-installed and it’s all gone away
Back to Maccie’s point…it does seriously piss me off that ‘big brother’ Adobe is watching me all the time… I’m considering running the internet on a separate machine away from my work tools. But no doubt I’ll probably find that the tools don’t work unless Adobe is allowed to watch…

It isn’t, it doesn’t. That behaviour is simply a bug. Don’t let this
not-at-all-surprising and unintended misbehaviour of ancient software
on a (relatively) modern OS push you into conspiracy theory land.
But if you insist, then install Little Snitch, figure out what is
communicating with the outside world, and then analyse the data to
see what info actually is (and isn’t) being shared.
I’m sure this ‘ancient’ software is not trying to communicate with its maker - I’m pretty sure back then they hadn’t dreamt up such a thing. (ok, they’d dreamt of it but thankfully couldn’t implement it)
I do note with much newer software from said company that it runs off to adobe land to install some wee update nearly every time I open it. Must be something in design of the thing…
Hugh, it’s been some years since I left Typestyler behind. I don’t think it survived my transition from OS9, especially since I found Photoshop had acquired most of the features of TS I used most often.
So, with that in mind, is there anything particularly that TS does that PS doesn’t?

Hi Keith, nice idea about snitch.
Use it well! It will tell you a lot. And, I hope, show you what isn’t happening too.

Heh. Things weren’t quite so backwards pre-OS X, believe me.
I remember back in OS 8 or 9 days writing a little app that I could
use to have a host Mac check automatically for online instructions
from an online server and do whatever it was told; speak text, quit
apps, open documents, upload data, even shut itself down or restart.
I did it as an experiment, and no, it wasn’t a virus - just a regular
app.
Ever since the Mac’s system software started using TCP/IP properly
(early System 7 days if I recall correctly) it hasn’t been hard to
implement online checking and ‘tattling’ routines. It is just that it
took always-online broadband to make this sort of thing practical.
Fortunately, the Macintosh world has never taken particularly well to
blatant abuses of this kind, and - on the whole - developers
generally prefer to retain at least a shred of respect from their
users.
But seriously - and bear with me because I don’t know what Image Styler is capable of - there must be native OSX applications that will do what you want.
I have got to the stage where I don’t believe that I really need Classic any more. .I have found/updated applications that will run in X.
And lets face it if you want to keep up with the OS then Classic will not be an option.

Oh dear…I don’t think we want to go down this discussion track again…do we , Paul?..
But seriously…I’ve had a look around and can’t find anything that is it’s equal for what I want/need/do.
Maybe I could look harder (I’ve already got Fireworks but it’s too complex), but I can’t be bothered when I’ve got something I like and which works for me.
I used to use ImageStyler and was very unhappy when it went by the
wayside. I actually still have a PC version that works, even on Vista.
Not that I ever use it. Maybe you should look at ArtText 2.
It sometimes appears on MacUpdate promos and MacZot. I use it all the
time.

If you give us an idea what you use Image Styler for then maybe we can suggest possible alternatives.

Unfortunately it will only be a matter of time before you are forced into an alternative - you would be wisely prepared if we can help point you in the right direction.
