Have Host Server Upgrade in Progress

Been getting odd error messages for the last hour as my computer attempts to check for e-mail from my website. So I tried to check in with Have Host to see if there’s a maintenance notice, and I see the Have Host website is down. As I type this, I just got an e-mail from James W.'s mobile that a server upgrade is in progress. Just FYI.

I wish I’d checked here before emailing him!

All email accounts and my website is down, although curiously enough some of my hosted websites are up and some are down.

Is there a time schedule in his email ENauta?

This is not good - did he send messages to us? If he did and he used out HaveHost hosted email addresses, then I’d class that as at least a FAIL as we won’t get them until after the upgrade. He knows 2 other email addresses for me (my .Mac and Gmail) so he could have sent the message to any of those and I would have got it.

I don’t think that this has been handled too well at all.

Sadly I have to agree. Discovered just after midnight so had to head for bed with uncertainty. Email from an alternative address to their support was been bounced back also.

:frowning:

s

ps/ but if the server is being upgraded at least thats something positive.

I’ve not had any communication over this and all the registered addresses
James has are non HH ones.

This is very strange, some sites are up some are not found at all and at
least one site is offering a directory listing which is EXTREMELY worrying!

BTW the directory listing are showing they are all empty which would
indicate this looks more like the result of a server crash with a restore
from backup?

I have sites there with databases, I hope to *** they come back.

Absolutely - I’ve seen this and it is very concerning. I am getting a mix of this, 500 Internal Server Errors and DNS faults (which OpenDNS catch and warn me about). The problem is that the directory listing happens occasionally. Other times, it’s another error.

The problem here is that James is in Canada, and is probably asleep right now, so we won’t get an update until he wakes up.

This is intolerable. I am starting to investigate alternatives.

My Uptimerobot has been reporting them down for about 12 hours now. I received no email message in advance about a server upgrade. I am attempting to move sites right now and trying to placate site owners.

I wonder if Have-Host might have grown bigger than is manageable. A few more episodes like this and it will be VERY manageable.

I got an email from James in response to my question.

He says (and I just copy / pasted):
"Hi Paul! The server was going through a minor upgrade last night and was supposed to be done before 6am your time. I have already asked for answers from the techs andcshould lnowore of the why soon my apologies. "

I don’t recall what email address James has on record for me, but I know he has seen my gmail address so I could have been contacted that way. I was not.

I’m not being bugged by site owners, yet. However, at least one friend of mine told me they tried to send me email and got a failure notice. Depending on the sending server’s settings, who knows if they’ll retry or give up before Have Host comes back up.

I feel badly for those of you who have lots of sites hosted and upset clients. I can’t imagine what it would be like for anyone who was going to have a site roll out now and a client who was ready to go live.

James is a great guy and this may have been out of his control, but I went to offsite hosting instead of doing it myself for reliability. :frowning:

Yes - though reports here indicate that it started going down around 10 - 11pm GMT last night, which means that it’s been off line for the best part of 13 hours.

Still no comment from James here about the situation from what I can see either.

I have been using “bad words” this morning.

I suspect that the server upgrade was supposed to occur invisibly without disruption, and things went awry. Of course, as my husband says, “I would expect to receive an email notifying me of any upcoming maintenance procedure, even if it’s not expected to be disruptive.”

Like Paul, I got an e-mail from James last night because I contacted him. His 404 page had a link to notify the webmaster; I clicked the link and sent a brief email about my email problem and the have-host.com site being down. James replied via iPhone with the news about the server upgrade.

I really like James and have appreciated his accessibility and technical acumen. I’ve steered several of my customers to Have Host, and have my own site there. This is the first time (to my knowledge) there has been a lapse of service.

Ironically, my $143.00 yearly payment is due today.

I like James too. However, I don’t think he has handled this particularly well. The last maintenance outage was pre announced, and I was able to pre-warn clients. This time, I’m on the back foot because I had no prior notice. I’ve only had one email response form him today. I asked him for more information about what was going on, and I have been met with silence.

I have very little information to pass on, which is not good.

I also like him too - I have emailed him and IMed him and nothing. As soon as I hear anything I will post - if you guys could do the same. Thanks

His head is probably spinning trying to fix this… but a quick post or im would be appreciated.

It is now 6 hours since I got my first irate call from a client, the only consolation I have is that half my important sites are hosted with Dreamhost, their support is excellent. Unfortunately I, like Kryton will be investigating alternatives soon, despite the b***ache of having to move everything.

I know James has been good but sadly since he now has a job perhaps his heart is not in this anymore, or his tech support need a good holiday ( Alaska maybe )

I too have alternate contact emails and after the last server downtime you would think a little warning might be useful, it would at least give you time to do any database backups on behalf of clients, one of mine has been upgrading her store for a week and we decided not to do a full backup till she had finished so I too hope all the data is intact.

Well, I’m in Canada too; it’s almost midday in Toronto (time of post may not indicate this) and I have three sites down for over fifteen hours now. I’ve emailed my customers and I’ve emailed James on his gmail address. James is very nice and helpful once you can get hold of him; it’s the getting hold which is the problem.
