'Last Updated' info on Home Page (Pro)

Hi all you bright guys and girls out there. On a website I built and maintain for my golf crowd I placed as markup item to indicate when the home page was last updated. I have 2 questions relating to it

  1. How can I get the date to show in UK format (dd/mm/yyyy) and
  2. Do I need to place the same markup on each page so that each is monitored in the same way?

Thanks

There’s an Action for this, either on ActionsForge or Tim Plumb’s http://freewayactions.com site. I believe that it allows you to set the output format in the Action, and it may be a Folder Action, so you only have to set it up once; or you could apply it on a Master Page to get the same effect.

Thanks Waltd but I can’t find the action you mention in either of the places. Can you help further please?

It’s called Last Modified Pro, last item on this page: http://www.freewayactions.com/product.php?id=beta

So was I - thanks. And it works a treat for a site I am currently modifying, so I will now be sure that the client is referring to the latest version and not one he looked at last week!

Thanks gents. I downoaded it as a zip file but i have to confess I don’t know how to use it. When I opened the zip file I was presented with about 20 lines of code. which I copied. Then, in FWPro I inserted it as html markup. When I previewed it, all I got was the copyright notice. What am I missing.

Needless to say, I am very new to web design and FW in particular (does it show?). When I read the questions and answers in this forum, I am humbled.

Hi John, what you downloaded is a Freeway Action. All you have to do is drag the unzipped file over the Freeway Application Icon and you will get a message to say that an Action is being installed.

Then, in an HTML container, enter the words , say, "Last updated: " and, with the curser still flashing in the line of text, go to the Insert Menu > Action Item and click on Last Modified Pro. This will insert an in-line box ( which you can re-size, if necessary) and the parameters for date and time will appear in the Action Window (Window Menu >Actions, if not already open). Just choose you date and time format. The style will reflect what you have already chosen for your preceding text.

Hi again ColinJA

I’m also new to the Mac. I tried as you suggested. When I left clicked the zip file on my desktop to drag it over the FW icon in the apps folder in the dock the apps folder closed immediately. I also tried dragging it over the FW icon itself in the dock and still nothing happened. I also tried opening the apps folder in finder and dragging the file there. No joy.

Hate to be a pain but what now?

John, look at your downloaded file. It should have the name ‘Last modified pro.act3’. If not, either ‘unzip’ it or re-download. You should then be able to drag it over the Freeway Icon in the Dock, to be installed.

Thanks again ColinJA

I had to unzip it first and then drag it to the FW icon. I’ll have a crack at using it tomorrow. It’s late here.

The file that you downloaded and unzipped to give you ‘Last modified pro.act3’ is an older version of a FW action file.

To use it with later versions of FW change the file suffix from ‘.act3’ to ‘.fwaction’ - this will allow it to be properly recognised by FW4/5.

Then dragging the Last modified pro.fwaction file over the FW Dock icon should install it correctly.

Just as a note, David, it still installs with the .act3 extension on the latest version of FWPro. Good housekeeping to change it, though.

Thanks again for all your patient help.

I tried this action with Freeway Express AS and the Action does not show up in the Action list. I have tried both the file as downloaded and also renaming the extension. Both files are recognised by Freeway and a box appears but I can’t fine then in the Action list.

Am I doing something silly here?

There are three different ways that you can “actionize” anything in
Freeway. The Action-item is either drawn on the page, or inserted in
the page or another container from the Insert menu. The Item-Action is
applied to a particular element on the page, and in order to apply it,
or to see its interface later, that element must be selected in the
design view. And the Page Action is applied to the page itself,
through the Page / Page Actions menu. Like the Item-Action, the Page
Action will only reveal its interface when the page (that is to say,
when nothing else on the page) is selected.

Freeway Express does not allow (except for some very rare exceptions)
the installation of additional Actions – it comes with a rich
selection of core Actions, and Softpress reserves the ability to add
more as a model differentiator between Express and Pro. You may have
to pony up the price difference (very generous upgrade policy) and use
Pro if you want to use this Action. Otherwise, you’ll need to manually
update this datestamp yourself whenever you update the site. (If you
place the element on the Master Page, it shouldn’t be much effort at
all.)

Are you absolutely sure that Freeway Express AS does not allow this action to be installed?

If you drop the downloaded action onto Freeway, then a message appears saying “You are about to install Freeway Actions that replace previously installed actions.”

That implies that during a previous attempt to install this action, that it did install that action and it is asking if you want to install it again!

I would have expected a message saying something like you need to upgrade to Pro to install this action if the Express version did not work with this action.

I haven’t had a copy of Express since version 3, when I was doing the
packaging design for it and needed to take screenshots, so my
information may be out of date. But what I believe is that unless an
Action has been encoded (and I had to send the FreeCounter Action to
Softpress and have them encode it) Freeway Express will not load the
Action or allow it to be used. It certainly may behave the way you
describe when it comes to installing the Action, but as to allowing it
to run, that’s another matter.

If you look in ActionsForge, there are a set of version icons next to
each Action you may download there, signaling which versions of
Freeway the developer has tested them on. Actions that have been
encoded for Express have a little E in their icon, bottom-right
corner. Check out this one for example: http://www.actionsforge.com/actions/view/202-vimeo
As you can see, it runs on 5 or 5.5* Pro and Express.

Walter

*Confusingly, 5.6 is a version of 5.5, not a .1 upgrade from a
slightly lower version of 5.0. 5.0 and 5.5 are different major versions.

That implies that during a previous attempt to install this action,
that it did install that action and it is asking if you want to
install it again!

I would have expected a message saying something like you need to
upgrade to Pro to install this action if the Express version did not
work with this action.
