pixelmator Vs PSD

Quick question of the day…

If I have PSD CS5 is there any reason I should have pixelmator also?

Thank you.

Pixelmator is going to get better in version 2, looks so from the beta announcement. It’s a competitor to Photoshop because it’s cheap and the feature set is simple. Photoshop is unbelievably expensive and for less than a hundred (I’ll have to check the price) you can get a solid editor that is better than any alternative out there.

Now what makes Pixelmator super weak is the typography tools. Flat out has to be the number one reason, because you are able to do simple graphic tasks in Pixelmator and then keel over when you can’t find tools like kerning, leading, or anything outside of Apple’s typical type tool box.

I look forward to Pixelmator 2 getting some type tools plus it isn’t as resource heavy on the Mac here like Photoshop is.

In version 2 of Pixelmator will there be any line tools, vector tools or anything a person with an engineering background could use?

I buy way too many toys and was disappointed I had a art tool that could fix a blemish but I could not use it to draw a diagram or map?

By the way version 3.02 of Intaglio.app draws great lines. I just wish there was something that did a little of everything?

I miss Color-It.

Acorn has fabulous drawing tools, and everything remains vector until
you generate an export image in a pixel format. I bought it on a lark
in one of those bundler programs and think it’s quite powerful.
Definitely not Photoshop or any sort of a Photoshop “killer”, but very
nice at what it does.

At some point I’m either going to have to upgrade to Adobe’s “Mortgage
your House Edition” or pick one of these lighter tools to work with on
Lion. All I have here is CS3, and I am not sure that it’s entirely
Lion-proof.

Sorry; I miss read (or did I) - do you currently have PS ? If so then my reply stands. If not then pixelmator or Acorn or even Elements 9 are fine and a lot less expensive.

thanks Dan for heads up …
Just had a look and it certainly does seem to be a big step forward. It’ll be interesting to see how the type tool fairs, though its down at the bottom of their list, that might indicate nothing revolutionary.

Pixelmator might just be developing a shine.

Thank you all for your thoughts.

I do have PSD CS5 -
But I am always looking for other “creative” tools to help me with a number of things. I am unsure if I should get it or not. If there were things that it could do easier than PSD etc.
Dan, when is V2 coming out?

PS if anyone has a program recommendation that is good to remove backgrounds (textured) from photos - I would love to hear it. I am using the quick mask in PSD and its a bear.

Does PhotoSoap in OS 9 count? I have not seen it in years but it did amazing things to photos. Want to take a telephoto picture two blocks away in fog and rainstorm and read the licenses plate?

I just checked online and this appears to be their current link:

There are plenty of tutorials on the web to clip out backgrounds or send the image off and get it done professionally. There’s also plenty dedicated software for clipping out backgrounds that are better than Pixelmator or CS5.

Pixelmator is no more ‘creative’ than CS5.

Have you tried ‘Extract’ in Photoshop Julie?

Interesting. Has anyone tried this? I wonder if it’s noticeably superior
to other masking tools. For $160 I suppose it better be.

Have not tried it yet but we use their excellent Perfect Resize (formerly Genuine Fractals) and I would imagine it’s just as much a quality app. I have a project coming in the next few weeks and will first try their 30 day demo before I buy.

I use MaskPro religiously in my set up. It’s my secret weapon for when clients send me scanned in copies of their logos (file that under a facepalm) and I need to just choose the colors I want to keep and the ones that I want out. A tremendous time saver.
