Please Help!! Image Replacement Action Causing Problems

Hi,

I’m using the image replacement action on graphics. At first it was working okay, but now the graphic changes to some big ugly text instead of keeping my graphic. I’m setting one h1 and one h2 image replacement per page. I’ve got the alt text in, of course. Here’s the site to preview it: http://www.noramclutch.com/beta/.

Looks okay to me, latest Mac Safari.

I’m sorry, I forgot to mention, it’s the other pages (not the home page).

That’s really odd. It looks like the stylesheet is being created and
linked to the page to support the effect, but the sheets being created
are empty. Can you try deleting everything in your local Site Folder
(on your computer – not the server) and publish again? Sometimes
Freeway needs a sharp slap to wake it up, particularly when dealing
with generated files like the ones this Action makes.

I’ve already tried that –– several times. I deleted everything.

Try removing the Action from the photos you’ve applied it to, publish
once, then apply it again. I’m not sure what else you could try. What
version of Freeway are you using, and what version of Image Replacement?

Freeway Pro 4.5.2
The Action is dated 5/2/08.
I have 150 pages that I will have to redo (h1 + h2), so that’s 300 images I’ll have to remove the action, and then do the alt text and action all over. :frowning:

Just try it on one page and see if that helps that one page. The alt
text won’t be removed when you take off the Action, so all you will
need to do (not to make too little of it) is apply the Action, choose
H1 or H2, and move to the next page.

Looks like that works. I took the action off the graphics on several pages, saved, and then republished. Then I added the graphic again (the alt text was still there as you said), saved, and republished. Much better than having to redo all the alt text. Thank you, Walter.

I can’t believe it. The same problem is back. I just don’t get it.

Did it come back on one page, or all pages? Was there a particular page after which it just gave up and started doing what it’s doing?

Hi Walter. As of 3 a.m. last night, I got the file to where only approx. 9 pages were experiencing problems. On one of the those pages, a graphic that wasn’t even on that page, was appearing. I trashed all of the files that were published, and tried again, but no luck.

How the pages look WITH the action applied:

How the pages look WITHOUT the action applied:

I’m sorry about this, but it doesn’t look like that Action is working
correctly any more. Maybe Freeway has evolved too far for it, or maybe
the whole business with Actions making files breaks down above a
certain number of pages. I don’t have time to rewrite it at the
moment, but I might be able to squeeze it in tomorrow sometime.
Basically, I think it could be simplified considerably by pushing all
of the CSS into the head of the page rather than creating an external
file.

The reason I made it an external file was so that the stylesheet could
be invoked only when viewed on screen. When the page is printed,
background images don’t show, so the headers would be missing
entirely. By making the external stylesheet only for screen use, the
browser would print the H1-6 tag as boring black text (but at least it
would be visible). Browsers have moved on with their support for the
@media tag in CSS, so I think I can get away with it being in the page
head now.

Okay! I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t something I was doing wrong. I had analyzed the pages over and over last night, (one page where it worked, and one page where it didn’t) and I couldn’t find anything different. If you could rewrite it tomorrow, that would be fantastic. I’ll be able to meet my SEO deadline. THANK YOU

Give this a try.

http://www.actionsforge.com/actions/view/199-imagereplacement

The original Action was written in 2005. I think the reason why the
downloads page listed it as 2008 was that that was the last time I
updated my downloads system (way pre ActionsForge). The new Action
does not create external files, so it should be a lot more reliable in
a large site.

Hi Walter. I am getting publishing errors that say the screen.css font cannot be found."

I had resaved the file after making some edits, and gave it a different file name and I created a new folder to publish the files in. I deleted the older version. The files are publishing and it seems to be okay in the browser, but I keep getting a page of errors for each item that was tagged; i.e. “Rebecca:Users:Rebecca:.Trash:70_screen.css for this resource cannot be found - it will not be published.” I tried to force republish, but it still gives the error.

It sounds as though your document might have an embedded (cached)
version of the Action with the old behavior (external files) still
included. I removed that from the latest version, but Freeway doesn’t
always use the version of the Action that you’d like. I’m afraid that
you may have to identify the page or pages where this problem is
arising, remove all instances of the Action once again from those
pages, publish, then re-apply the Action. That should clear the
problem. Another fix might be to try restarting Freeway, and if that
doesn’t work, the entire computer.

Hi Walter. I was able to get the error off all the pages, except the home page (index.html). It’s still giving me a error message, even though there is no h1 or h2 tag anywhere on the page.

I was also wondering how I could get it to print out without the big black ugly text for the h1 and h2 tags? It doesn’t print how it looks on the screen.

It can’t print the way it looks on screen, because background images don’t print by default. If your users know to turn on background printing in eir browsers, then it could (if I changed the code of the action) but right now, your choice is big and ugly or missing altogether.
