[Pro] Embedded fonts?

Would somebody please walk me through the steps of embedding fonts? I recall doing this before, but my memory is fading.

My recollection is I was going to use the Caxton Action, but in the end I don’t think I needed it. Thanks!

No disrespect Paul. I just can’t remember how I made this work. For what it’s worth, I located my old post regarding this subject, which mentions an action called “Web Fonts Page Action”, but I can’t find that anywhere online and it’s not installed on my current system.

Okay, the mystery remains. I just installed the Web Fonts Action and it didn’t show up in my FWP document. Please have a look at this website and see if you can figure out what I did to make the embedded fonts work. I really need to get better at note taking.

What on that page is supposed to be a web font?

The h1 is a font called Subway Novella, which looks like this: Subway Novella Font | dafont.com

Here’s the source code:
h1 { color:#f33; font-family:Subway Novella,Georgia,Palatino,Times,serif; font-size:26px; line-height:1.25; text-align:left; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:2px; -webkit-font-smoothing:antialiased; font-weight:normal }

I just can’t remember what steps I took to make this work.

But it doesn’t!

You may well see it because you have the font in your system.

Well that sucks. I guess I’ll need to fix that. If I want to embed the font should I use Caxton or something else?

Web font action or via Page>Markup - there are several ways to do this.

Why not try Paul’s Caxton action and see how it goes for you - you can jump back in here if you need help.

It is important that you are comfortable with the workflow that you choose.

Agreed. So which workflow would be the easiest?

There isn’t much between them - I think that you have to decide which you like the look of and go with it.

I have tended towards the no action approach - but that is just me!

I ended up using Tim’s Web Fonts action, which I think worked well. Please verify the results here and let me know:

I also learned a very valuable lesson today. ALWAYS check your completed website on a Mac or PC with default configuration and fonts. Not doing so is a real rookie mistake.

Thanks David. That’s what I was going for.

The funny thing is my client, even after having previewed his new website at my office, never mentioned any issues with the fonts—even the extra spacing brought about by the ellipses running too far to the right, which caused a word wrap. I’m really embarrassed that I didn’t catch that prior to delivering the job.

For what it’s worth, I found Tim’s Web Fonts application to be very easy, once you grab the concept of what is happening.

Hey Raven,

I use typekit. It costs a small amount but I get to use the fonts I want to without any worry over licensing issues (ff meta, dax, etc). Plus it is soo easy to use with Freeway.

You can try it out for free https://typekit.com

And if you have any questions I’d be more than happy to help/

Alan, Thanks for your post. This option sounds very intriguing to me. Please tell me how to set it up with a Freeway Pro document.

Thanks!

Ok.

What you need to do is think about what typeface you want to use, go to typekit and make sure it’s there. I paid for the 49 dollar yearly and I get all the top notch fonts.

Decide in your website what you want to go where, and set all the style tags by going to edit, styles.

Specify your h1. Every style factor will be used apart from the type face of course. Including size, bold etc.

So, you’ve formatted your FW pages so every bit of copy has a tag, h1s, h2 … p1 p2.

Head back over the typekit and find your font(s) and add them to your kit. The kit will then generate a bit of java script for you. All you need to do is copy this code and then go back to your FW doc and paste it in the html mark up "before . Got to the page menu, then html markup and paste it in the first option it shows.

Now I’m sure that there is a away to apply this to all pages automatically, but I just went into every page and added the code individually. Upload your site.

Now go back to your typekit. You will see your typeface in the kit, and at the top left you will see a search box. Here you need to add your styles that you specified for all of your copy. What you are doing is saying apply my web font to these styles please. So, type in h1. then add, h2 and so on. Then you click publish and after a few mins your website will have beautify typography.

You will have to play around with it until you get used to it. But it really is such an amazing service.

In terms of setting your styles, they dont have to be perfect. For instance on my page www.thepopfarm.com I have tags like h1.header, h1.tagline, p.homepage, p.largerhomepage. This means that I can have the same font, different weights, colours, etc and control everything. Oh and you aren’t having to sweat for breaking any licences.

In summery.

You set the styles,
You pick the typefaces,
Typekit hosts the fonts,
All you do is add a little bit of code.
Job done.

Any issues let me know and we could even do a skype screen share if you need it.

Best
Alan
